Hey /x/, let's take a break from the earthquake crap/usual shitposting and actually have a thread about something truly /x/-related:
Let's have a thread about creepy crimes and mysteries that remain unsolved to this day.

For the record, let's avoid he Dyatlov Pass Incident.
Every time it gets mentioned it derails the thread with pointless debate.
But aside from that, any crimes with creepy circumstances or a still unsolved status are fine.

Bonus points if you include a summary in your post instead of JUST a Wikipedia-link.

I'll start us off with a classic.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glico_Morinaga_case

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Monster_with_21_Faces

>In 1984, masked thugs take the President of a wealthy Japanese candy company hostage after breaking into his and his mother's houses.
>Hold him captive in a warehouse and demand 1 billion yen and 100 kilograms in gold bullion for his return.
>President manages to escape but has no idea who his captors are.

>Unknown assailants light cars on fire at the company's parking lot and leave threatening messages with containers of acid

>Company receives letters claiming that their candy products have been contaminated with potassium cyanide from a person/group that signs the letters as "The Monster with 21 Faces"
>Company pulls products from shelves and finds no poisoned products. In total the prank cost them 21 million dollars.

>Police pursue a suspect at a money-drop in exchange for ceasing harassment, but lose the perp. Officers identify him as the "Fox-Eyed Man".
>He escapes capture at a second money-drop, abandoning his car which they find had a radio transceiver for eavesdropping on police.
>Police Superintendent in charge of the case later commits suicide by pouring gasoline on himself and lighting himself on fire.

>More taunting letters, and then the person/group is never heard from again.

>Fort Worth, Texas
>February 25th, 1994
>39-year-old James McVeigh Jr. is found dead at an abandoned warehouse.
>His wallet, full of cash, is still in his pocket. So are his car-keys.
>His truck is parked outside, unlocked, still FULL of the highly-expensive, easily re-sellable specialty tools he used on his job.
>A background-check and investigations proves he had no involvement in crime, gambling or drugs.
>He was severely beaten and shot twice at point-blank range in the back of the head.
>His face has been entirely spray-painted blue.
>One witness saw his car arriving at the warehouse, proceeded and followed by two unidentified cars, indicating that the crime was perpetrated by multiple people with an organized, premeditated plan.

>As of today, 0 suspects, 0 leads, 0 plausible motives proposed

Hey OP, I'd love to contribute with a fantastically weird true story but I can't find the source for it. Basically, a woman was brought into an american (?) hospital and died. Her blood was apparently horrific in terms of smell, and the section of the hospital she was in was immediately quarantined because whatever she was carrying was extremely contagious (I think airborne). This was documented and everything, and well worth the read (was quite a long article) if anyone can find it.

Holy fuck I know what you're talking about and was actually going to go digging for that myself.

I can't remember her name, but the Hospital was American. And apparently the smell of her blood was so horrendous that it made the doctors physically ill.

This one's right down the road from me. I actually saw the house before they tore it down. They used the timber to make a covered bridge. It's unfortunately on private property now or I'd go get some pics.
It's not so much "unsolved" as no one knows for sure what set the guy off.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlie_Lawson

In 1929, shortly before Christmas, Charlie Lawson took his family (37-year-old wife Fannie and their children: Arthur, 16; Marie, 17; Carrie, 12; Maybell; 7, James, 4; Raymond, 2; and Mary Lou, 4 months) into town to buy new clothes and to have a family portrait taken. Since they were far from wealthy, this seemed unusual. The new clothes ultimately became burial outfits. On that day he began the slaughter with his daughters, Carrie and Maybell, who were setting out to their uncle and aunt's house. Lawson waited for them by the tobacco barn; when they were in range, he shot them with a shotgun, then ensured that they were dead by bludgeoning them.

He then placed the bodies in the tobacco barn.Afterwards, he returned to the house and shot Fannie, who was on the porch. As soon as the gun was fired, Marie, who was inside, screamed, while the two small boys, James and Raymond, attempted to find a hiding place. Lawson shot Marie and then found and shot the two boys. Lastly, he killed the baby, Mary Lou. After the murders, he went into the nearby woods and, a few hours later, shot himself. The only survivor was his eldest son, 16 year-old Arthur, whom he had sent on an errand just before starting his deadly work. The bodies of the family members were found with their arms crossed and rocks under their heads. The gunshot signaling Charlie Lawson's own suicide was heard by the many people who learned of the gruesome event on the property and had already gathered there. A police officer who was with Charlie Lawson ran down and found Charlie dead and letters to his parents. As footprints encircled the tree it was supposed that he had been pacing around the tree prior to taking his life.

Pic related. Their first and last family portrait.

A couple roads over there are tons of reports of odd things happening. On that particular rd in the 50's or 60's a man committed suicide by putting a stick of dynamite in his mouth and lighting it. I know that happened for a fact, as I have seen the newspaper article in the library archives. There are rumors of other things involving that family, such as a child being thrown down one of their wells, but there's no proof of that or the other rumors.
In the early 90's a woman was tied to a tree stump, raped, beaten, and murdered.
The bridge on that road has some weird rumors surrounding it involving tricks of gravity, i.e. cars will drift up hill when in neutral.

Not exactly a crime, but it was high profile, on the news and it could possibly lead to the discovery of a crime committed.

>Polish military proseutor is looking into the airplane crash in Russia that cost the lives of the Polish president, some of the parliament and high class politicians/military
>In the middle of a press conference presenting information about the investigation
>Cuts the press conference short for a five minute break
>A minute later a bang if heard from the backroom
>The military prosecutor attempted to commit suicide
>Later he confessed he had been a marked man

Who was after this guy? The Russian government playing dirty; not wanting him to leak any evidence that it was them who caused the plane crash?

To be honest, I think it was the Russians, Lech Kaczynski didn't play easy with the Russia while in power, and he was a big nuisance for them. But then again, I am a Polfag.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boy_in_the_Box_%28Philadelphia%29

The boy's body, wrapped in a plaid blanket, was inside a cardboard box that once contained a baby's bassinet from J.C. Penney. The body was found first by a young man checking his muskrat traps. Fearing the police would take his traps away, he did not report the matter. A few days later, a college student spotted a rabbit running into the underbrush. Knowing there were animal traps in the area, he stopped his car to investigate and discovered the body. He too was reluctant to have any contact with the police, but did report his find the following day.

The case engendered massive media attention in Philadelphia and the Delaware Valley, with pictures of the boy even being placed in every gas bill in Philadelphia. However, despite the publicity at the time of the body's discovery and sporadic re-interest throughout the years, the case remains unsolved to this day, and the boy's identity is still unknown.

The Vidocq Society got involved with this one and couldn't find shit.

Who Put Bella in the Wych Elm?

On 18 April, 1943, four teenage boys from nearby Stourbridge, Robert Hart, Thomas Willetts, Bob Farmer and Fred Payne, were in the woods poaching. They came upon an old hollow elm tree (which has been mistakenly called a wych-elm down the years) and decided it would be an ideal place to search for birds’ nests. Bob Farmer attempted to clamber up into the tree, but as he glanced down inside the hollow trunk he suddenly saw the empty eye-sockets of a whitened skull, staring up at him from among the twisted branches.

On returning home the youngest of the boys, Tommy Willetts, felt uneasy about what he had witnessed and decided to report the find to his parents. When police checked the trunk of the tree they found an almost complete human skeleton, a shoe, a gold wedding ring, and some fragments of clothing. After further investigation, a severed hand was found buried in the ground near to the tree.

The body was sent for forensic examination by Prof. James Webster. He quickly established that the skeleton was female and had been dead for at least 18 months, placing her time of death around October 1941. He found taffeta in her mouth, suggesting that she had died from asphyxiation. From the measurement of the trunk he also deduced that she must have been placed there "still warm" after the killing as she could not have fit once rigor mortis had taken hold.

Since the woman's killing was in the midst of World War II, identification was seriously hampered. Police could tell from items found with the body what the woman had looked like but with so many people being reported missing during the war, and people regularly moving, the records were too vast for a proper identification to take place. The current location of her skeleton is unknown.

If no real identity was found for the murdered woman then at least a nickname surfaced. Around Christmas 1943, graffiti began to appear on the walls of empty buildings in various parts of the West Midlands area.

The first – “Who put Luebella down the wych–elm?” was followed by many other slight variations, such as ‘Hagley Wood Bella’ found on a wall in Birmingham. As time passed the messages took on what was to be their settled form for years to come: ‘Who put Bella in the wych–elm?’ they asked. It was thought that the original messages, carefully written in chalk in three-inch-deep capital letters, were probably written by the same hand, working at night.

Though the graffiti seemed to be the work of a hoaxer with a sick sense of humour, there was the slim possibility suggested by the slogans that somebody knew something about the crime. But appeals for the mysterious graffitist to contact the police proved futile, though the messages continued to appear, and have so, intermittently up until the present.

The graffiti was last sprayed onto the side of a 200 year-old obelisk on 18 August 1999, in white paint.

There were and still are many theories as to the identity of ‘Bella’ and the mystery of her murder. But perhaps the most controversial was put forward at the time by Professor Margaret Murray, of University College, London. She was a respected anthropologist, archaeologist and Egyptologist, but her theories on the origins and organization of witchcraft, with her suggestion that it pre-dated Christianity, were controversial, and not taken seriously by many of her colleagues. Today some of her books have become cult titles including The Witch-Cult in Western Europe (1921), The God of the Witches (1933) and the Divine King in England (1954).

Professor Murray drew attention to the fact that the hand was missing from the skeleton when found, and suggested it was the sign of a black magic execution. She linked it with ‘The Hand of Glory’, traditionally obtained at the dead of night when it would be cut from the body of an executed criminal hanging from the gibbet or gallows. The hand was supposed to possess powerful magic, and was used to protect its owner from evil spirits, to reveal where treasure was buried or even to put people to sleep. She also drew attention to the ‘ancient tradition’ that the spirit of a dead witch could be prevented from causing any more harm by being imprisoned in the hollow of a tree.

Salish Sea Human Foot Discoveries

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salish_Sea_human_foot_discoveries

Since August 2007, as many as fourteen detached human feet have been discovered on the coasts of the Salish Sea in British Columbia (Canada) and Washington (United States). The feet belong to five men, one woman, and three other persons of unknown sex, the two left feet having been matched with two of the right feet. As of February 2012, only five feet of four persons have been identified; it is not known to whom the rest of the feet belong. In addition, a hoax "foot" was planted on Vancouver Island.

In November 2011, two feet that had washed up ashore were identified to belong to a woman who committed suicide by jumping from the Pattullo Bridge in New Westminster in 2004. This may suggest that the feet belong to various people who have jumped from the bridge, however no further evidence has been found suggesting that the other feet also belonged to suicide jumpers.

Clapham Wood Mystery

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clapham_Wood_Mystery

The Clapham Wood Mystery is the name given to a collection of unusual events which are associated with Clapham Wood, West Sussex, England, resulting in the area developing its own lore in popular culture. Events have included reports of people making unusual sightings or experiencing unusual phenomena, and of family pets disappearing or sickening. There have also been several human deaths associated with the location.

In their 1987 book The Demonic Connection Toyne Newton, Charles Walker and Alan Brown claimed that Clapham Wood had been used by a satanic cult called the Friends of Hecate (FoH). Part of the book dealt with an incident in 1978 when Charles Walker is said to have been contacted by an initiate of the group, who claimed that it was responsible for the sacrificial slaughter of dogs and other animals. The man said that the FoH planned to use the wood for at least another decade before finding other locations, and he claimed that people in high places were involved, and would tolerate no interference in the group's activities. Walker claimed that the cult was later forced to leave the area due to a combination of press attention and a storm, known as the Great Storm of 1987, which damaged large tracts of the wood the year that the book was published.

Perhaps the most famous unsolved "creepy" murder of all... the Black Dahlia

"The Black Dahlia" was a nickname given to Elizabeth Short (July 29, 1924 – January 15, 1947), an American woman who was the victim of a gruesome and much-publicized murder. Short acquired the moniker posthumously by newspapers in the habit of nicknaming crimes they found particularly colorful. Short was found mutilated, her body sliced in half at the waist, on January 15, 1947, in Leimert Park, Los Angeles, California. Short's unsolved murder has been the source of widespread speculation, leading to many suspects, along with several books and film adaptations of the story.

>6:00 AM on August 31, 2004, a man was discovered behind a Burger King in Richmond Hill, Georgia.
>He was found by the managers of the restaurant, lying on the ground inside the stone wall enclosing the dumpsters, in a space between the dumpsters that is accessed by a walk-through used for trash disposal. The dumpster enclosure was behind the Burger King in an area hidden from view from all directions except from the restaurant parking lot. Prolonged exposure to the sun had left him sunburned.
>He was assumed homeless and taken to a hospital for treatment. Officers who searched the scene found no clothes or wallet to identify the man. According to the manager, there were no weapons found at the scene. Paramedics reported that there were three depressions in his head, that may indicate blows by a blunt object. When found, he had no memory of who he was, and did not even recognize his own face.
>Initially, he was known as BK because he was discovered on the premises of a Burger King. Since then, he has chosen to live under the name Benjaman Kyle and insists that his real first name is Benjaman.

It’s creepy enough when someone goes missing without any explanation, but when someone just APPEARS with no explanation and there is NO evidence available that they even previously existed, despite all this constant searching, that leaves you with even fewer explanations than when a person disappears.
My money is on him being a defective clone grown in a test-tube that escaped a secret government facility.

Well scratch one mystery if that's true, but at the same time, maybe the graffiti being on his truck was coincidental, as his truck sat there for several days it might have been vandalized by a passing group of gang-members.

Either way, it still doesn't explain why he wasn't robbed or why his truck wasn't looted.

>Rule number 1 of serial killing is to never steal from your victim.

LOL, wut?

Stealing from the victim is a common thread in Serial Killers. Obviously not all of them, but it's far from rare.
Some even steal from their victims as part of their psycho-sexual dysfunction, using items taken from the victim or the scene of the crime to later mentally relive the crime in private as part of a masturbatory ritual. BTK did this with every murder he committed.

And it doesn't even have to be psycho-sexually motivated.
Some Serial Killers steal from their victims for completely non-sexual reasons and instead because they're just greedy assholes.
Richard Ramirez and Aileen Wurnos both stole from all their victims just because they wanted money/something the victim happened to have.

>In Liverpool, 2008, identical twin sisters Ursula and Sabina Eriksson, originally from Sweden, were denied a Taxi-ride on the M6 highway when the driver started noticing suspicious behavior between the two. They clung to their bags and stared aimlessly, and refused to let the driver check their bags for illegal items. He dropped the two off at a Service Station. The owner of the Service Station called the police as the twins' suspicious behavior continued with them attempting to cross the busy freeway on foot.
>Police arrived and pulled them back out of the traffic and onto the hard shoulder.
>The police spoke to the twins when, without warning, Ursula ran into the side of an oncoming 40-tonne truck travelling at around 60–70 mph. Sabina then followed her into the road and was hit by a Volkswagen Polo travelling at high speed. Both survived. Ursula in particular was fortunate not to be killed instantly. Instead, she was immobilised as the lorry had crushed her legs. Sabina spent fifteen minutes unconscious.
>The pair were treated by the paramedics; however both women resisted medical aid, fighting and screaming at the paramedics and police officers. Sabina shouted "They're going to steal your organs" and "I recognise you – I know you're not real".
>Sabina got to her feet, whereupon a policewoman attempted to persuade her to stay on the ground and receive further medical attention. Sabina instead struck the officer and crossed the central reservation again, running into traffic on the other side of the motorway. Emergency workers and several members of the public caught up with her, restrained her and carried her to a waiting ambulance, at which point she was sedated. Ursula was also taken to hospital where she stayed for weeks.

>On 19 May 2008 Sabrina was released from court without a full psychiatric evaluation having pleaded guilty to trespass on the motorway and assault on a police officer.
>She was spotted by two friends, one of them Glen Hollinshead, walking down a local street with a dog. Though friendly, Hollinshead and his friend noticed she was "behaving oddly". Hollinshead took pity upon her and instead offered to take her back to his house at Duke Street, Fenton. Sabina accepted the offer and the three walked to the house, as Sabina told the men how she was trying to locate her hospitalised sister.
>Back at the house her odd behaviour continued; most notably she offered the men cigarettes, only to quickly snatch them out of their mouths as the men smoked them, claiming the cigarettes to be poisoned. She was also carrying multiple mobile phones, as well as a laptop. She appeared to be paranoid and constantly looked outside the windows.
>The next day, while Hollinshead is calling local hospitals for her, Sabrina fatally stabs him 5 times in the chest with a kitchen knife before fleeing the premises.

>Sabina ran out of the house with a hammer, periodically hitting herself over the head with it. A passing motorist saw this extraordinary behaviour and decided to tackle her in an attempt to confiscate the hammer. While wrestling with him, Sabina took a roof tile out of her pocket and struck him on the back of the head with it, stunning him temporarily.
>By this time paramedics had found her and gave chase. The pursuit was ended at Heron Cross when Sabina jumped from a 40 ft high bridge onto the A50.
>Having broken bones in the fall, she was taken to hospital.
>On 6 June 2008 she was arrested while recovering at a hospital and was later discharged on 11 September, at which point she was charged with murder.

>The Taman Shud Case,[notes 1] also known as the "Mystery of the Somerton Man", is an unsolved case revolving around an unidentified man found dead at 6:30 a.m., 1 December 1948, on Somerton beach in Adelaide, Australia.

>Considered "one of Australia's most profound mysteries",[1] the case has been the subject of intense speculation over the years regarding the identity of the victim, the events leading up to his death and the cause of death. Public interest in the case remains significant due to a number of factors, the death occurring at a time of heightened tensions during the Cold War, the use of an undetectable poison, lack of identification, the possibility of unrequited love and the involvement of a secret code in a very rare book.

While scrutiny of the case has been mainly centred in Australia, there has also been international coverage.[2]

The Fire of Jeannie Saffin

There are many famous cases of people who seem to have spontaneously caught fire (Spontaneous Human Combustion) but there is a lesser known case of a woman who suffered this fate in front of witnesses. At approximately 4 p.m. on Wednesday, September 15, 1982, Jeannie Saffin aged 61, burst into flames while sitting on a wooden Windsor chair in the kitchen of her home in Edmonton, London, England. Her father, eighty-two-year-old Jack Saffin, was seated at a nearby table and said he saw a flash of light out of the corner of his eye and turned to Jeannie to ask if she had seen it. He was astonished to find that she was enveloped in flames, mainly around her face and hands. Mr. Saffin said Jeannie did not cry out or move, but merely sat there with her hands in her lap. Her father pulled her over to the sink, badly burning his own hands, and started trying to douse the flames with water. Jeannie went in to a coma and died 8 days later. The policeman who conducted the investigation into possible murder reported to the coroner’s court that no cause for Jeannie’s combustion could be found. There was no charring or signs of burning anywhere in the room except on Jeannie’s body.

The Axeman of New Orleans

The Axeman of New Orleans was a serial killer active in New Orleans, Louisiana, from May 1918 to October 1919. Not all of the Axeman's victims died, but the savagery and utter randomness of his attacks terrorized much of the populace.

His victims included a pregnant woman and even a baby killed in the arms of its mother. The Axeman also seemed to draw direct inspiration from Jack the Ripper: he (or someone claiming to be the Axeman) wrote taunting letters to city newspapers hinting at his future crimes and claiming to be a supernatural demon from Hell.

The Village That Disappeared

An individual that vanishes is one thing, but how about an entire village of 2,000 men, women and children? In November, 1930, a fur trapper named Joe Labelle made his way on snow shoes to an Eskimo village on the shores of Lake Anjikuni in northern Canada. Labelle was familiar with the village, which he knew as a thriving fishing community of about 2,000 residents. When he arrived, however, the village was deserted. All of the huts and storehouses were vacant. He found one smoldering fire on which there was a pot of blackened stew. Labelle notified the authorities and an investigation was begun, and which turned up some bizarre findings: no footprints of any of the residents were found, if they had vacated the village; all of the Eskimos' sled dogs were found buried under a 12-foot-high snow drift - they had all starved to death; all of the Eskimos' food and provisions were found undisturbed in their huts. And there was one last unnerving discovery: the Eskimos' ancestral graves had been emptied.

Okay. This is. Unnerving.
So the father saw footprints in the snow leading up to farm, but not leading away from it.
He hears noises on the attic, finds a newspaper that isn't his, ... TELLS THIS TO THE NEIGHBOURS yet he and his family is still lured ONE by ONE to the shed.

The. Fuck.

I don't know how that happened therefore aliens.

Stoneman

In 1985, the first hint of a serial-killer who was targeting homeless rag-pickers and beggars in India came from Mumbai. The killer would find an unsuspecting individual sleeping alone in a desolate area and the victim's head would be crushed with a single stone weighing as much as 30 kg. In the summer of 1989 in Calcutta the murders began again. The cause of death and choice of victims was identical. Twelve people were killed in a 6-month period. All the victims were homeless pavement-dwellers who slept alone in dimly lit areas of the city. Panic gripped the city and the world media labeled the killer Stoneman.

In most cases a large stone or concrete slab was simply dropped on the head of the victims as they slept.

The crimes remain unsolved to this day. Similar incidents were reported in the Guwahati city of Assam state during February 2008.

Not unsolved but...eh, here goes:
there's a story from Squid bay (akkarvika), where my family owns a house, about two fishermen who had such great luck with their hauls, I mean...they got A LOT of fish!
So the other fishermen were like: what the hell do you use as bait and where can I get some?"
the men would smile at each other and say "we get it from the danish bloke"
well as it turns out, one guy was mighty curious about this and started shadowing them...
He found out what they used as bait. And they did indeed get it from a danish bloke.
Being rather uncomfortable with these guys using human meat as bait the shadowy fisherman vigilante (not as awesome at it sounds) got his mates together and they trapped the two guys under their own boat and lit them on fire.

The local man o' the law supposedly had better things to do than crack down on vigilantes (and to be fair, back in the dark days of the 1920's that might be true)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spontaneous_human_combustion
The body is completely or almost completely incinerated, while nearby furniture that should normally have been damaged under such temperatures remains intact. Damage is limited to the victim's clothing, to the area of the floor or furniture on which he or she died, and to the ceiling above the corpse.
The torso is the focus of the fire, and if remains are found these are of the extremities, such as the feet.
There are no traces of fire accelerant, and the fire does not have an evident external cause.
The victim is typically alone at the time of death, and is thought to have been alive when the fire started, despite showing little sign of having struggled.

k how about this one?

This one involves the residents of Hoer-Verde, a small town in Brazil. There were over 600 of them that disappeared overnight. It happened in 1923. A police investigation was launched. All that was left was a gun that had been fired the previous day and some words written on a chalkboard. Those words were "There is no salvation."

I wasn`t able to find a scientific explanation for this one. However, it is Brazil, and it very well could have been armed thugs who somehow escaped from Rio kidnapping 600 people for ransom then deciding to just kill everyone eventually. Brazil is known for crazy individuals. If you are a woman and have ever been to Rio, you know they will cut your finger off for your wedding ring. There is really nothing all that far fetched about thinking a group of them might march 600 people into a Piranha infested river.

Dude apparently "OD's" but is found miles away from any scent trail left from his ATV on the top of a mountain (which worked fine), found naked high in a tree with a look of abject horror. FBI took over the case instantly and refused to release the body for view for months.

The Mauerova Family

This one has it all: a cult, torture, cannibalism, and family. If it were a movie, you probably wouldn't watch it because it's full of those over the top details that always come off as something trying too hard, but this is a real horror story.

In 2008, Klara Maurova and her sister Katerina were arrested for torturing Klara's 8-year-old and 10-year-old sons. The act was an effort to make them religious slaves to the cult they belonged to, known as The Grail Movement, by breaking their wills.

Along with some other relatives, Klara and Katerina put the kids through all kinds of misery, but the award goes to skinning one boy's arms and making him eat it.

By a remarkable chain of events, the truth about the Maurova family was discovered on May 10, 2007 when horrific images on a baby monitor (which they had installed in their house to view the crimes) where picked up by a neighbor who had the exact same monitor. A total of six people were eventually convicted.

Pic related. It's the older sister, who participated in the torture.

Strike that. Pic is of chief torturer, who merely posed at the boys' sister, clutching a teddy bear, when police swooped in.
