Dont worry guys! I have came up with a solution, but we may have to use
MATH!

Use these steps!
>You look at the stats of your bro
>Write that shit down
>look at special
>Add Special + Attack
>Devide by 2
>Add Special + Defense
>Devide by 2
>you now have Special attack and Special defense

There now you can somewhat make it work
well, you can edit the numbers to work more for the pokemon.

Hello everyone, here's an idea, just buy something to back up your saves, then replace the watch battery.

Something like this http://www.amazon.com/MEGA-MEMORY-CARD-Game-Boy-Color/dp/B00002R108/ref=pd_sim_vg_1

I have a monster brain, it worked great for backing up my saves.

People are whining because while the battery is replaceable, once it's replaced their saves will be lost.

I guess there are a lot of people who have that one, single save that's been untouched for nearly 14 years, but I don't fall into that category. For the most part, with each Generation I moved on, in part because I knew it was using battery-backed memory. It wasn't until Gen IV that I settled down and made a point to got insane with getting every possible Pokemon then leaving the game largely untouched.

Probably because the memory that stores save data needs the power from the battery since it uses RAM instead of ROM for some reason. They got around it later since storage became much cheaper.

Random, somewhat unrelated story, but my brother had a knack for accidentally erasing my Sonic Adventure 2 Battle save. In case you don't know/remember, on the file screen it always gave you a yes/no confirmation, even if you were just loading the file, and of course it did the same thing if you were erasing it. So all it took was my brother accidentally pressing the joystick in the wrong direction to select "erase" rather than "select" and he ended up erasing it.

...THREE TIMES. I had to fight that goddamn giant lizard three motherfucking times. Oh sure, I had to beat the rest of the game too, but that fucking giant lizard with the bubbles. Fuck. After a while I just said fuck it and stopped trying. Thank god Chao saves were a different file.

Data does not have an unlimited lifespan. It's not magic.

It might take a hundred or two hundred years but that shit will end up just like your RBY carts. I was asking how long the lifespan of flash data is.

No one is expecting these things to last forever. Hell, eventually the plastic will deteriorate if we really want to go that far.

In a perfect world, all saves would last until we died. So 100 years just to be safe. Not that we'll all be playing Pokemon in nursing homes, but... wait, we'll probably totally be playing Pokemon in nursing homes, never mind.

Of course it doesn't. But at the rate of data transfer for the pokemon games which is practically negligible it's probably close to the maximum limit. I don't know how long the data will last, but it will probably still work in your lifetime.

Flash memory is more likely to die from writes than over time. I believe the flash memory type used in the GBA games has ~1000 full writes or so while the memory used in DS games has ~5000 before it fails.

Both the GBA & DS games keep 2 copies of your save and switch between the two so you can effectively double the count. 2000 writes still isn't that much, though. That's 3 years of playing daily if you save twice a day.
>> Anonymous 02/13/12(Mon)04:34 No.8747301
>>8747296
The good part is, it only affects writes, so you can copy it if you happen to have one of those card readers for the DS carts then you can copy it at least.

I should be sad, but... I'm not. Battery from my Red died during the time it was lost for years in cold outer garage, I am in Cerulean in Blue (Hell, I had played through the game once, my starter was long lost because of dumb friend, and I wanted to experience the story again), and I haven't owned Crystal for multiple years. Sold it to friend (Same friend that made me lost my original Charizard. Dumbass. Actually, it was his dumbass sister who did it. Shouldn't have borrowed Crystal ever.). And if I ever want to replay any of them in my trusty motherfucker (Pic VERY related), I can just swap the battery and feel nothing.

I am horrible person, I know, but I have no nostalgic connections to my games currently.

I know one of my Crystal carts doesn't pass time while not on and I know my Gold cart won't save. The rest (Another Crystal, Red, Yellow) I assume will be dead too. This thread makes me incredibly sad.

Quite, but not really. R/S and all Pokémon games since then use flash-type saves. The battery is only for the clock (in GBA games, for the DS games, it uses the clock from the console), that's why FR/LG don't have any battery in it.

Guys, i have an idea. It'll take a fuckton of programming skill, but I don't see a flaw:

What if someone made a program that basically looks at the data of the pokemon from gen 2 and puts it on gen 3 with the same OT, ID, level, IVs, EVs, and moveset? The experience would be different, but if it just starts it at the level rather than how much total experience, it seems negligible. Since the secret ID doesn't exist in gens 1 and 2, one could be generated that makes it shiny by looking at the IVs

Thoughts?

Goodbye, old friends. I love you all <3

I'll never forget all the adventures we shared, the battles we won (and lost), and the bond between us.

Typhlosion, you were such a bro.
Umbreon, you were the best first dark type ever.
Ledian, you may not be the most powerful but you were one of my favorites.
Houndoom, you were such a good companion.

And all the rest of my Pokemon, I'll miss you, but I'll always look back happily at our memories.

Who knows?
Maybe I'll replace the battery and we'll meet again in the next adventure...

Okay, let me break it down.
Stat experience was given at the end of each battle, giving you a certain amount of experience, capping at 65,536 per stat, based on the base stats of the 'mon you defeated. So fainting 655 mews, with 100 in all stats, would max out all stats. Vitamins gave 1,000 points to one stat per dose. IVs, called DVs in Gen I/II, were a number 1-31. These values determined shininess, and the Attack DV determined gender in Generation II.

Depends on the game. Pokemon RBY or GSC? Plenty.

I once backed up my Gameboy Camera data on it just to see if it was possible. Took too much space though so I cleared it.

There's a visual indicator on free space at the bottom of the main menu for it. Starts as an empty horizontal bar.

Also, I should add, my original red data is still on it. Still restores and backs up the save fine.

What's really interesting is that you can take a silver save, restore it onto a gold version, catch gold exclusives, then backup/restore onto the silver, and it works.

Don't use this for Yellow though. For some reason it fucks it up. Not like it's needed for Yellow anyway.

You can get a soldering iron at wal mart for like 10 bucks. Find some junk electronics on the curb for trash pick up and practice. Soldering in a battery will be a LOT easier than trying to solder actual components though. The battery swap should be an excellent first time soldering project.

>called DVs in Gen I/II, were a number 1-31. These values determined shininess, and the Attack DV determined gender in Generation II.

DVs were 0-15 back then. Gender was based on Attack DV, with the lower numbers being female and the higher numbers being male. This would mean that for a species where 1/8 is female, an attack IV of 0 or 1 would yield a female, while an attack IV of 2-14 would be male.

A weird consequence of this is that, since shininess was also determined by IV's, and 0-1 attack IV's do not yield a shiny, certain species of pokemon cannot be both shiny and female at the same time.

I think Nintendo would do it, and it's totally possible.
Obviously every Poke fan would buy into it. Especially now that R/G/B/Y/G/S/C's batteries are being picked off.
So yeah, it's totally a plausible thing for them to do, yet I doubt it's crossed their minds yet.
