1. Remove zombies and replace with Better Zombies.
1.a. Better Zombies have loads of health. When struck with fists or anything that isn't a tool, they take very little damage, but if struck several times quickly they will fall over and become harmless for a moment before getting back up. A hoe, shovel, or pick can harm them more. If struck with a sword or power-attacked, pieces of the zombie may fall off such as arms, legs, or heads. These pieces can attack you too, but are more easily destroyed.

2. Remove skeletons and replace with Better Skeletons.
2.a. In a similar vein to zombies, Better Skeletons can take more punishment and have a habit of falling down. Instead of firing a bow at you, they launch bones at you, and as they use up their bones (or take damage) they shrink and change into less threatening bone monsters. (Such as a skull with arms, or just a hopping skull.) They can also pick up bones from the ground and become larger. (Bone spiders, tall skeletons, bone-weapon skeletons, pic related, etc.)

3. The ghost. Invisible without an item to reveal it. Ghosts are glued to a specific area of the map and can't leave that area. While near the player, harmless ghosts will push buttons, throw switches, open and close doors and chests, and move torches. Evil ghosts will knock your torches over, attempt to push you if you're near the edge of a block, and attack you with weapons or tools that they find lying around.

4. The fire spirit. Invisible and harmless until it finds a source of open flame, including a torch. It then appears as a burning figure that can attack with small fireballs. (These can't destroy the terrain.) If struck, it will try to hop to another source of flame, requiring the player to try and trap it in order to kill it. If all sources of flame are removed, it does not die, but goes back to waiting and following the player slowly.

5. Sinister shadow. Looks for a transition from a lit to unlit place near the player, and appears as a line of darkened tiles creeping toward the player. Attacks with dark grabbing hands from floors, walls, and ceilings if close enough. Very averse to fire, retreats when attacked. Can't attack in total darkness.

6. Death mask. (Requires decorative block addition/wearable masks! Could use jack o' lanterns as a placeholder.) Masks that float and harass the player by bumping into them and attacking with puffs of black smoke. Defeating one may destroy the mask or cause it to fall away for a moment. Evil ghosts can create these by possessing a mask. (Follows the rules for haunting, can't leave its turf, etc.)

7. Wandering mushroom. Rather blatantly stolen from Dungeon Crawl. These guys appear from normal mushrooms, and also disguise themselves as them. When roaming around they look like a mushroom-man. Sneaks up on the player to assault with lumpy fists and clouds of toxic spores.

8. Ferocious flower. Flowers that are slightly larger than normal and rustle around. Launches a poisonous but low-damage projectile that drifts slowly through the air. (May look like an entirely different kind of flower?)

9. Vapors. Can't be seen from far away, appear as drifting clouds which become agitated when the player blunders into them and deliver an icy attack. Freezes water tiles it comes into contact with, and also spawns from water underground. (Could replace ice with lightning...)
>> Roo 09/12/11(Mon)06:07 No.110001608
Wendigo/Yeti.
Only in snow biome; big hairy gorilla. Smashes blocks when he attacks. Drops snowballs and a low chance of dropping a chunk of meat.

Penguins
Passive. Drop fur when they die. Can be tamed and given iceshards to throw at enemies.

Swordfish
Passive, but aggressive when attacked. Drops a sword from wood to iron.

Items:
Chunk of Meat
Chunk of meat heals half health and is deployed like a cake, heals full health when cooked. Dropped by -boss- monsters.

Fur
Fur is akin to leather, but the armour looks different.

Iceshards
Crafted like snowballs, but do damage equal to a single arrow. Can't be retrieved and melt if you move out of the frigid zone, whether that be horizontally or vertically.

Blowpipe: Crafted by three sticks. Uses cacti spines as ammunition. Weaker than regular arrows, but the ammo can be farmed unlike flint.

Ice can now be moved like a regular block. When powered with redstone, ice will melt.

Seriously, make cacti, snow and ice useful for something, -Jeb-.

Gaint Sand worm.
Waitd silently under some sand, once you step on it it will make a little bit of sound and jump at you for lods of damage.
If you're far enough and it can't reach you it will go back and maybe move.

Really strong, can take a lot of punishment but drops some teeth that can be used to make stuff.

A swamp biome.
With new trees, small areas of swamp water.
Leeches in the water.
Swamp monster, the classic walking mud thing.Very rare and very strong.
Snakes around the area. The snakes will poison you after a bite dealing half a hearth/s.Standing still will make it last shorter.Poison can be applied to weapons and do the same effect to enemeis.

Yes please.
I made one... in my head.

>Tomb Wailers

>They only spawn in caves, or at least in caverns.
>Flee from light sources, extremely vicious in the dark, dealing over 6 hearts
>Have a scream similar to that of the Ring Wraith in LOTR
>When cornered with light, they take damage
>They'll walk on all fours, and can walk sideways on walls

They'll look similar to this.

10. Goddamn bats. Self explanatory - they fly around sporadically, like caves, and are most active in the dark. Tiny ones are harmless and shy.
10.a. But not the giant ones.
10.b. And vampire bats mean trouble.

11. Daddy Longlegs. A compact-looking spider that resides in a nest of webs, but emerges as a 5-block tall spider that's mostly leg. Difficult to hit because of the body's height.

12. Golem. Disguises itself as a natural terrain block, but turns into a player-model with that terrain as its texture. Passive, but making the wrong ones mad could be a bad idea. (Like stone or lava golems, for instance!)

13. Doppleganger. A pale, eerie looking humanoid that looks for things to imitate. Animals that are being imitated don't wander around quite like their normal counterparts do, and have a habit of staring. In multiplayer, dopplegangers make a concerted effort to follow and duplicate players, down to their floating names. Attacks with flailing, whip-like fingernails and a shrill, dissonant screech.

14. Vampire. Burns in sunlight, has a classical Stoker vampire's abilities. (Can turn into a bat, a wolf, or a vapor.) Has a really bad habit of not actually dying but just returning to its coffin instead. A relentless and fast-moving pursuer, but won't pass through a door that the player has not opened themselves recently and drops absolutely everything to pick up seeds that are thrown.

15. Stranglers. Otherwise normal-looking vines that rustle before launching out at the player. Slice them to cause them to uproot as roaming tubers.

What about mimics? They mimic treasure chests in dungeons or a single block of ore or maybe a tree. If you don't notice it and you get close, it slaps you across the room and teleports somewhere else in the chunk. Slap would have to do 6+ damage to make it worth it.
Has to be killed with a ranged weapon or avoided entirely, and can be located by a chittering noise it makes.

And even though you say Tolkein-ish shit would be bad, i'd like to see ents.

16. Remove creepers. Replace with Better Creepers.
16.a. Better Creepers appropriately disguise themselves as saplings or leaf blocks when they're not pursuing the player. Much rarer than before, and for a good fucking reason.

17. Giant Pea Aphid. Bloated green bugs that hang around on cacti, melons, and other juicy plants. Like their smaller real life counterparts, if threatened they can explode with unpleasant results.

18. Sandworm. Eternally popular request. Moves freely through sand, causing the blocks to 'ripple' as it moves. When near the player it surfaces to bite and shoot sand balls.

19. Scorpions. Nasty spider-like creatures that bury themselves in sand during the day in the desert. Hunts at night with vicious claws and a deadly sting.

20. Giant mosquito. Great buzzing insects the size of eagles that are out for blood. These reside in swamps and heal themselves when they attack you or other animals nearby.

21. Megapede. Very bad news, a fast-moving monster that scurries along walls, floors, and ceilings and uses a dangerous hit-and-run tactic to poison and then finish off the player. Distinct skittering sound. Not very thrilled by light and tends to avoid it. Has a long, segmented body.

22. Giant snail with a shell that can be stood on. A harmless, passive, slow-moving creature. Grab your saddle for exciting times.

23. Moray. A deadly aquatic predator with a body that behaves like the megapede. Not poisonous, but swims around quickly and strikes repeatedly.

24. Undertoe. A sea-dwelling foot that tries to kick you. Drops boots. Rare and somewhat pointless.

It'd be pretty neat to have Greys flying around in UFO's abducting cattle and other fauna. That would have to be pretty rare though. Even rarer, they abduct you and you experience "lost time." The rarest event involving them is they abduct you, but this time you don't lose time; you find yourself on a slab surrounded by a couple of them and you have to fight your way off the dimly lit, and terrifying UFO. God help you if on of their overlords spawns.

25. Vodyanoy. A rare and evil water spirit that appears as a disturbance in the water. Emerges as a figure made of water, and attacks by trying to drown the player by sending 'limbs' made of water out to grab them. Attacking normally only causes the creature to flee briefly...
25.a. May signal its presence with groups of vapors.

26. Fallen star. A very rare monster appearing as an extremely bright ball of fire. Attacks by igniting its surroundings. When struck, it has a chance to become 'angry', with a characteristic flickering animation and roaring flame noise, before melting everything within several tiles of it. You read correctly - it can turn the floor into lava. Can vaporize arrows.

27. The Good Doctor. A humanoid giant mosquito with a face resembling a plague doctor's mask, that folds its wings to form a 'coat'. Makes house calls, and with impeccable bedside manner - they'll disturb you in your sleep and stare at you for a bit before trying to stab you with a proboscis. Very rare, not often seen in the open.

28. Snakes. Pretty self explanatory. Shy, semi-passive mobs that only take an interest in the player when they draw close. Hisses in warning when there's a risk of attack. Desert biomes feature rattlers.
28.a. Striped sea snakes have a roaming habit and appear in oceans. A bit easier to blunder into.

29. Jellyfish. Also self-explanatory. A passive but poisonous squid-variant. Another source of slimeballs.

30. Big happy. A floating, ethereal, eternally grinning wraith that appears behind the player and follows them from time to time. Sinister looking but not dangerous. Vaguely resembles the Michelin Man.

Combine this with the Better Skeletons idea; some of the skeletons you find will stand up, and all of them are bone sources.

Skeletons that aren't roaming for the player could 'sleep' as undisturbed remains. (This is also an alternative to them burning in the day.)

Tremors mobs.

Graboids, shriekers, but no assblasters. Fuck assblasters. We don't need no flying mobs.

Also Golems, Titans, wraiths...

30.a. Contact with the blatant Uboa ripoff warps you to someplace else.
30.b. Looking directly at it causes tunnel vision and the player to be drawn toward it inexplicably, leading to sudden blackness and transportation to somewhere new.

31. Venus flytraps. Basically seconding this idea, a mob that appears as a large carnivorous plant and slows the player's movement while doing damage. Only active in the day.

32. Yeti. Also seconding this. Camouflaged, brutish, appears in snow. Tough customer.

33. Glories. Superficially similar to vapors. When distant they appear as shimmering, colorful wisps that rapidly change color, becoming more visible as the player draws near. What's inside is not yours to see - staring directly at them when close enough will cause a bizarre, many-limbed figure to appear that blinds the player temporarily with a flash and a strange cry.
33.a. While impervious to arrows, attempting to harm one will provoke it to strike you with lightning.
33.b. Fond of a rainbow weather event?

34. The Stranger. A ghostly man (similar to the thread's Tomb Wailers) that appears and asks you for something, occasionally in your sleep. If you decline, he'll leave by fading away. If you didn't have the item he asked for in your inventory when you declined, he'll leave you alone. If you did, he'll appear behind you again. (This isn't good.) If you try to harm him, it's the same as 'lying' to him - he'll fade, come back, and try to murder you. Complying with the stranger produces mixed results, from the stranger leaving you alone to showing gratitude by leaving you things in a box near the last bed you slept in.

35. Mold. Repulsive, quivering enemies that resemble slimes but launch drifting spores and multiply on their own - especially if they find something to munch on, such as zombies or skeletons or pieces of food.
35.a. Molds begin life as very tiny spore enemies that can follow the player by sticking to them. Water washes them away.

Continuing piece by piece since /v/ is bitching that part of my comment isn't allowed. (What.)

36. Halo. A floating, glowing torus. It guards chests, portals, and other objects of interest and attacks with lightning, even from far away if shot. Possibly summons or spawns with Glories. Requires creative thinking to get close enough to destroy...
36.a. It can't attack something it can't see.
36.b. It can also be buried alive.
36.c. A mask may confuse it?
>> Anonymous 09/12/11(Mon)08:00 No.110008131
>>110008055

37. Iron Maiden. A despicable torture device animated with evil magic. It rolls around on feet made of steel marbles with a rattling sound, and swings its front doors open to catch the player. If caught, the player must struggle to escape. (Possible similarity to venus fly trap?) Drops iron and bones when killed.
a. It moves faster on some surfaces, slower on others, and can't move at all in dirt, sand, or gravel.
>> Anonymous 09/12/11(Mon)08:02 No.110008262
>>110008131

38. The Box. Appears as eight floating cubes made of elaborately patterned but rusty, tarnished metal. The cubes float around and shove the player, before attempting to converge on the player's head, damaging them via the suffocation/buried-alive effect. Also drops metal.
>> Anonymous 09/12/11(Mon)08:05 No.110008454
>>110008262

39. The Crucible. A metal cauldron filled with molten rock, carried astride by long, spider-like legs. Has a pair of humanoid arms, with one hand holding a ladel which can scoop out the melted material inside it and fling it - these projectiles spawn cobblestone blocks. Has a chance to drop a lava bucket when killed. Picks up loose rocks on the ground, making it a potential ore-thief.
>> Anonymous 09/12/11(Mon)08:07 No.110008560
>>110008454

40. The Dynamo. A buzzing, humming, floating gyroscope that tries to drift over the player's head and zap them. When charging up an attack, it hums louder, and arrows shot at it during this time will fly around it and be flung back toward the shooter. (Though with less accuracy.) Again, it drops metal when destroyed.

-Exp points is like coins to buy skills from
NPC villages.

-A huge NPC village (only in big cities) may have
a trainer (only 1 trainer).. it could be an alchemist, a wizard, sword masters, Dwarf Miners and a necromancer. 41. Sky Giant. These leave outlines made out of sand or gravel on flat ground wherever they sleep. When awakened they tower over absolutely everything as a glowing, wispy giant and wander the world, usually at night.
41.a. May also be associated with glories, halos.

42. Mud man. Swamp-specific creatures made out of mud that emerge from submerged dirt. Kind of short, and very numerous. Shrinks when damaged. An ore thief for loose dirt only. Their arms can extend long distances to smack the player.

43. Moai. A statue head and tribute to Gradius. Stationary, lobs fireballs from its mouth. Shoot arrows at its eyes while they're open to destroy it. Potentially numerous where they appear.

44. That Little Bastard. A rare and unusual mob that appears as a tiny stick figure, wandering around the player's home. Will appear to move motes of dust around... but fades if looked at directly.

45. Bees. Swarming, stinging bugs that live in and spawn from hives while producing honey. Common in forests. Disturbing a hive makes the bees associated with it very hostile. However, hives can be collected carefully, and when interacted with using the right items, honey can be collected from them occasionally.
45.a. In a nod to the real life miner bee, a very large, docile, subterranean bee could also appear.

Blue spiders are evil incarnate. They're roid-rage aggressive, like spiders used to be from older versions of the game.

Maybe make them as rare as lightning creepers and have them mainly spawn in desert biomes?

The tomb wailer might have been a good idea if it dealt less damage(nothing needs to deal that much damage, seriously). Then the guy that thought it up came back and ruined the idea. He's just trying to make some unbalancing crap. So that was a potentially good idea..

Hm..

The salamander might not be such a bad deal if it spawns exclusively very near to lava.

The sand worm could work if it was toned down from what was posted. That, or you make it such a ridiculously rare spawn that it acts as a sort of boss. If you do that, it better drop some ridiculously good shit.

Honestly, too many of these ideas either are blatantly unbalanced or don't add enough on their own to warrant adding. You COULD add a ton of tiny things to create a "fuller" seeming world, but then minecraft would just end up feeling plain cluttered rather than getting the wanted effect. Imagine playing with both Mo' Creatures AND Creeps and Weirdos. It's fucking terrible. Shit crawling over everything. The world suddenly just feels like a random mishmash of bullshit rather than well thought out.

Simple things. Light touches. Think about creepers. Think of how they work. The whole thing is.. actually rather simple an idea and operation, but it works so very well. Even the lowly zombies have their own special OH FUCK when they just pop out of a shadow you missed. Enderman are the most complex addition to date, but they are subtly done rather than overbearing.

I don't see what's wrong with a flying enemy that has a spinning animation, attacks from above, and redirects arrows.

I mean you're basically taking a dump on this guy's idea without even offering suggestions about how it could be improved, and your main criticism seems to imply that you don't like ANY of the mobs already in the game, because ALL of them are simplistic, predictable, and immersion breaking. You're presenting an opinion without supporting it at all.

In other words, you're being a completely average /v/ poster, so more power to you.

Didn't like the idea. Essentially the only thing to do is run and keep running and just do nothing about it. That's.. not fun. It needs to be scary but still allow the player to fight back. Minecraft DOES have an adventure element to it. It's not just sealing yourself into a hole and never coming.

FAIR ENOUGH.

Just tone down the damage. To compensate, remove it taking damage from torch light, but it being desperate to run out of the light IS a fascinating idea. That might be tough to code, but it's brilliant. It becomes this utterly ridiculous choice between fighting this thing in the pitch black or just letting it fucking stalk you everywhere. Trying to jump you every time you go forward to put a new torch down.

I can see people just standing on the edge of the light staring at it and wondering, "what the fuck do I do?"

Creepers were never well done.

They're jarring. They're everywhere. They produce very undesirable effects on the world, and what's more, they used to be a lot worse. Easily the least fun part of the game, which is sad since they're also the most iconic enemy. Creepers, like most of the things suggested here, would work much better if they weren't incredibly common.

As for endermen, there's nothing subtle about them. They're highly visible and noisy, and have several ways of announcing their presence. They aren't dangerous enough to be fear-inducing. (At least creepers have that. Everyone hates creepers. Nobody hates endermen.) Oh, look, a highly visible shadow guy is walking around! I'll not mouse over him and ignore it. Yawn.

Silverfish are a wonderful example of unused potential. Clusters of mobs that hide in blocks until mined? Yes please! Hopefully they'll be modified to appear in substances besides stone blocks, because they're so rare now that they may as well not exist.

About More Creeps & Weirdos: The clutter is part of the point. It's not a serious mod, and it doesn't try to be. It's designed to flood the world with as many outlandish things as possible. Just about anything in this thread could be fun, but most of the things in this thread would only work in the context of dungeons or special areas... which are upcoming and partly implemented already. It's almost like some of them were designed with that thought in mind.

Have a worm that mines/makes long tubes in a standard 2 block height all across the map. Have them spawn the deeper down you go. The closer to bedrock you mine, the more of them there will be.

Imagine removing one block from the wall only to see an eye blink back at you and than dig away. Imagine mining your first diamond block only to have one of these things burst through the wall to attack you. When killed, they drop diamonds... good luck trying to kill one though.

For creepers, that's just a matter of opinion I guess. There is just nothing similar that never fails to make people shit their pants like a creeper. It's beyond just looking scary. It's grown beyond the jump scare. It makes grown men scream like little girls.

And that's hilarious.

Enderman.. I guess subtle was the wrong word. I meant subtle compared to some of the ideas in this thread. I'm still not sure on them myself, but it's a good start. It's certainly not something I could see cluttering the game too much. Nor is it TERRIBLY overbearing. They can also be handled with some skill. That's what you need. It could probably be improved, yeah.

The silverfish potentially annoy me because of how small they are. Just hard to plain hit. Though it is an interesting facet added to one of the core components of the game. Mining.

I wasn't saying creeps and weirdos was a serious mod. I was just using it to prove my point. It would be very easy to make the game into a similar mishmash. Which is one reason why i don't overly mind notch being so damn slow. Others in his position probably WOULD jam everything in as quick as they could.

Though him halfassing a mod that already existed is annoying. That's a separate discussion though.

One balancing factor could be the possibility of hiring them as mercenaries / guards.

You could assign them guard posts/patrol routes using say, red torches to show them an area they should guard and a horn you can put in your inventory when you want them to follow you.

Yeah, exploration in minecraft needs to be dangerous, but not so much that it keeps people cooped up. It needs to be.. just dangerous enough to make people think

>..I think I can make it!

Goes for cave diving too.

One idea is just adding in the ability to hold a torch and have it give off light by holding it. Maybe add in an equipment slot for a torch. Hell, maybe add in lamps and use the lamp as a holdable light source. Hopefully this encourages going off into the dark without littering torches everywhere. I could see people losing the habit since they can just take the lantern and always see. Yet now things are not ideally lit. So things spawn in behind you for your return journey.

I know I'd do it on purpose in caves. Just so I could fight my way back up. I'm just forced to because I can't fucking see.

I understand that much, and a lot of these things (especially the 'constellations' of related mobs) would not work if they appeared frequently, or appeared in places where they don't belong. Many of them (especially the artificial, metal mobs) belong strictly in dungeons. Some are biome-specific, and some would necessarily be VAULT specific. (Appearing only in certain rooms, the way spawners do now.)

Having too many of the same kind of mob (that is, all of the farm animals) produces a feeling of clutter for me. Mo' Creatures is on the right track for breaking up the monotony of the game's outdoors. A big part of Minecraft, for me, has always been novelty. (The same goes for Dwarf Fortress and Dungeon Crawl.) Seeing something I've never seen before is rewarding, and not knowing what to do about it is exciting. Or disheartening, depends on the circumstances. I've eaten oatmeal that was more exciting than Minecraft's current mob roster, and even variations on the current mobs that make them more dynamic would be great. Remember when zombies were planned to be armed and armored?

Crabs on beaches would be fun. Especially if you could catch them.

Oceans... The coral mod that's already out there is really over the top but I like the premise. Colorful blocks of coral that grow in little reefs would be great, and could serve as a spawn location for tropical fish. Urchins and clams for passive critters, possibly with uses. (Clams are edible and can contain pearls.) A giant clam would make a neat, rare, and valuable find. The sharks and dolphins from Mo' Creatures are already pretty good but the spawn rate is too high. The moray, sea snake, and all types of jellyfish ideas from this thread would fit. (The trick is coloration. Oceans and shores are positively teeming with life, but so much of it blends in. Reefs are the exception, with their bright colors and brightly colored, noisy looking creatures.)

Also, seagulls to replace chickens on beaches.

And ducks to replace them in swamps.

And pheasants to replace them in forests.

For the mountains, goats should replace cows. (Especially since goats can be milked.) Pigs, what would they even be doing up there? Large birds of prey like eagles could reside in mountains and forests alike, but only the biggest (and rarest) would threaten the player. (Besides, pissed off rams with a knockback attack would be hell up there. So would yetis if they could throw you.)

The suggestion for making swamps murky and foggy was great. I'm all for crocodiles, and FROGS. Noisy, ribbiting, chirping frogs. And ducks. Herons could make a rare appearance, but like in real life they're skittish. (A beach version: Pelicans.) Swamps are an ideal haven for scary monsters, but having wildlife around is also good. (What if monsters made ambient sounds quit if they're near you?)

Deserts need scorpions, buzzards (especially if they sometimes used the Better Skeleton projectile bone attack... dropping bones on you, like some asshole birds actually do) snakes, and scurrying lizards. Some inspiration from the Sonora would be nice - more kinds of desert plant, for instance.

The colder plains and forests could replace any of the farm animals with deer or moose, no problem. Bears would be terrifying. Mo' Creatures has big cats, but I forget if it has bears.

Passive mobs, you cannot damage them.
They spawn frequently in abandoned mine shafts and fortresses.
They spawn rarely in caverns.
They never go far away from their spawn block (Five blocks max)
There is always some kind of indication on how they died.
There might be items they had when they died.
