Does anyone on here have a dollhouse? I'm in the middle of building my first one--I just got the roof shingled and most of the exterior is done, I'm waiting on wallpaper and such. It's a yotsuba B color with white interior. Anyone else have one with pics to share?
>> Anonymous 02/29/12(Wed)19:18 No.2772623
>It's a yotsuba B color
I love this. Not light blue, a "yotsuba B color." I'm not even being sarcastic.

Anyway, my grandma has a really nice doll house. It's not painted or anything, just a dark wood for the shingles and slightly lighter one for the exterior. I've always loved it. I'll probably visit her this weekend, if the thread's still around I'll post pictures then.

It was mostly a joke, I just realized after I had picked it out and painted it that it looked just like the message board backgrounds. And yes..I'd like to see pictures. I guess no one else on /toy/ has one or cares for them.

My mom made me a dollhouse when I was a kid. It opens up like a clam shell and the inside has velvet carpeting and cute striped wallpaper.
It used to house my pokemon and jurassic park toys and now it's in the garage because I refuse to get rid of it.

Hesitant to provide pics. It's up too high for me to take pics of the inside and the outside is... well, I don't want anyone judging my mom's color choices. Let's say it's vibrant, but it was made with love.

Your mom sounds awesome. And that's a nice dollhouse. I love all the detail, like the planters in the windows.

>>2772657
But that's charming! I'm assuming your mom is a child of the 60s/70s as that has mod colors all over it. She is obviously very creative if she was able to build the entire thing from scratch! Have you thought of taking it out and sprucing it up? Like electrifying it and putting it on display?

I love the painting detail she did on the box. I wouldn't mind seeing some more.
This sounds stupid but what I want to do is put a webcam in my dollhouse and have people able to look through a finished miniature room, then through the window, to see me typing on my computer.

oh god, everything's gone. I took it down to look at and everything inside has been gutted. I can't remember when that happened. Oh well, I'll just fix it up again if I find time.

I'd like to make the bottom left room into a transformers theme control room of sorts so I can pose them down there.. It'd be convenient to make four different scenes out of this for quick photographing.

You can buy some nice ones that are unassembled from Hobby Lobby. Considering that they're made of wood, and they're pretty big, I think they're pretty well priced. Keep in mind that you'd have to put it together with the nails and screws and such yourself, while at the same time you'd have to paint it too.

i had one a few years back. it wasn't all that special--one of those wodden barbie-sized dollhouses that's shaped like a shelving unit with a roof. i added wallpaper to all the rooms and fuzzy carpeting and little "posters" i printed out and filled it with tiny knick-knacks. i gave it a way to goodwill after a year because it was taking up space. i regret that day.

If you can't afford/don't have room for a dollhouse, you can get a room box.
I've got 3 of these. I'm going to permanently finish 2 of them. The first is going to be a bathroom, and the second will be Yotsuba's bedroom. I'm going to cut various wallpapers and flooring to fit the third one. Then I can have various color schemes & set it up to be a dining room, living room, game room, etc.
I bought large ones (link related), but they have other sizes.
http://www.miniatures.com/Large-QuickBuild-Display-Box-P18162.aspx
They're easy to assemble, and already finished in white. The front is plexiglass, so no dust inside.

Once I move into an apartment in a couple months, I am going to get a bookshelf or cabinet and turn it into an apartment building for my action figures.

The only reason I haven't done this already is that college dorms are holy-fuck-tiny and I don't think I could fit a piece of furniture that large in here... But yeah, I'm going to either buy something with partitions or put in partitions myself, get some paint, see if I can get my hands on free wallpaper samples, etc.

Seeing as how I mostly have JoJo and Hokuto no Ken figures, it's going to be the most manly, fabulous dollhouse ever, hahaha.

>Any suggestions for bathroom art?
what about a big mirror on one of the side walls? Obviously the back wall would be bad... That'd fill some space and is fitting for a br. Beach/ocean paintings or are also kind of bathroom-ish.

For scaled art, just print something out. You could easily frame it with your skill. You could use the same whatever it is that you used for molding on the top of the tiles.

Have you considered any electric fixtures? I don't know much about those but it'd be cool..

Photo of Drossel cleaning her bathroom for a photo comic I've been working on. (It's the project that finally got me working on the room boxes.)

Just realized I hadn't thanked you. Thanks for your good ideas.
Towels aren't really flattening out, so I'm thinking of using a small piece of double-sided tape.
>>2787834
Thanks for your help, too.
A full-length mirror on the left wall sounds interesting. I already have a few photo ideas. A framed beach/ocean scene sounds good for the right wall, above the towel bars.
I was worried about cutting the wood I used for the molding, but it came out fine without using any specialized tools. (I actually used picture frame molding.)
I've considered & rejected electric fixtures. Looks cool, but it's not in my budget.

I fidn it odd that owning doll houses is usually scene as a girl thing.

But MAKING them is always a male thing to do. Some dollhouses are built better than some real houses it seems, haha.

Same with the furniture. It is basically like building a real kitchen table, or what ever. Only much smaller.

I started scripting/planning it a few years ago & forgot about it. I found the files recently, and started actually accomplishing things. It's gonna be like a chapter of Yotsuba&, but it's about Drossel. (Not the personality from the series.) I'm sure it will be too long for most people's taste. At least it's getting me going on the room boxes. I've done that 1 bathroom photo I needed, and all of the photography in Drossel's room. It didn't take too much time to set up. It's fairly Spartan, except for educational material.

This threat has make me wanted to have some sort of dollhouse/room box for my figures, until now I only used some printed backdrops when I have taken some pics of the toys, also I'm lacking of the 1/12 furniture for inside the house and some for outside the house, like a backyard or a garage to accommodate my 1/12 vehicles (something like pic related will make a terrific garage/armory for my vehicles and weapons accessories) the full dollhouse would be great but I don't have enough room for that, the room box option is more easy to accommodate like the one of Andysocial or the similar ones the appears in some of the pics of GrannyNanny

at any case, I back traced the pics I saved 2 years back and now I posted, and find the original post of that author if anyone is interested

I'm sure you could, if you've got the tools & know-how, which I don't. I liked these because they're simple. Just glue the prepainted pieces together with the glue provided. Also includes hardware for hanging them on the wall. (Plus plexiglass front for NO dust!)
>>2794078
Ceiling trim: Awesome idea! I'll look into that. (Have some for Yotsuba's room, so I don't know why I didn't think of it. Probably because the original plan was to have another type of tile on the top half of the wall. Discarded that idea when I actually did the project.)
Laundry basket: I was going to have some clothes sticking out of the hamper. Just haven't gotten around to it.
Hair dryer: Gotta put some stuff on the space-saver shelving over the toilet to make the place look more lived-in. I'll look through my collection for appropriate items. (Maybe buy a hair dryer.)
Larger rug: Another excellent idea that I'll look into.

Then I moved a bunch of items to my wish list, and only ordered what I thought I really needed. I'm going to skip doing a kitchen, because I have the Muppet Show Swedish Kitchen playset. (Gotta break that out soon.)

Those are the outside dimensions. The internal floor is about 14 5/16" X 9 3/8" and the wall is about 8 7/8" high inside. I came out a little further than the 9 3/8" to meet up with the slot for the Plexiglass, so I had to cut notches in the flooring at the front. Pic related.
I'm an old-school drafter who started on a drafting board & I have steady hands, so I had no problem with the cutting. Did some "wood" flooring (paper) & wallpaper for other rooms with scissors before I remembered the Exacto cutting board my sister gave me for Christmas a few years ago. Really, anyone with steady hands, a half decent 18" ruler & good scissors could measure/draw lines/cut. The sheet of tile I used for the bathroom walls was vacuum-formed plastic with the tile section raised. I knew about how high I wanted to go, based on the heights of the toilet & sink, and cut along the nearest "grout" area. The vacuum-formed tile sheet for the bathroom floor was easy to cut with scissors. Since I didn't have the proper saw, I cut the wood with an Exacto knife (and patience). I was especially worried about the 45 degree cuts on the 2 pieces that needed to mate up in the corner, but everything worked out great.

I have some wood flooring too (real wood). It is 11x17, so I would need to try to cut it if I wanted to use it for flooring.

I am pretty bad at measuring and cutting. What would you say is the easiest way to cut for the flooring and walls? Measure with a ruler, then cut? Or do it more like a carpenter, and press it to the floor and cut?

is there a gap on the top with the plexiglass window? Seems like it wont keep dust out too well.

I know very little about carpentry, and nothing about how you should cut real wood flooring. Best advice I can offer: Measure twice, cut once. This will help you avoid a situation where you end up saying "3 times I've cut this board, and it's STILL too short."
Plexiglass has a piece of wood glued to it. Here's a pic from the top with the front on. It isn't hermetically sealed, but dust will be minimal if any does get in.

miniatures.com is pretty easy to navigate. I usually go to the right side of the page and "shop by room". (Or "shop by holiday" sometimes.) Definitely SIGN UP! They'll send you an email with a promotional code when they're having sales. (Wait for the 20% off sales.) Orders of $225.00 or more get free shipping. (Way too easy to find enough cool stuff to get this.) I usually put anything I might want into the cart, because that gives you a total. When I'm done, I look at the huge total & move stuff I don't really need to my wish list until my total is reasonable.

Watch out for scale!
Playscale is 1/2"=1' (Barbie & other 12" figures)
1" Scale is 1"=1' (6" action figures)
1/2" Scale items are half the size of 1" Scale items, so 2"=1' (Might be close for 3 3/4" or 4" figures. Look at the dimensions to determine whether it will work for you.)

can I get someone's opinion on this?

http://www.amazon.com/Calico-Critters-Country-Tree-House/dp/B002RBWKOO/ref=cm_cmu_pg__header

I'm thinking about buying it, customizing and repainting parts of it, furnishing etc and creating a "summer home" for my nendos/figmas/shinkis.

It's plastic, so it wouldn't clash so much with all my plastic toys, but it could also blend in to a summery/nature theme if customized right. Also, I believe it's a decent scale.

What does /toy/ think, should I do it?

I posted the treehouse, you should do it. Toy collecting is all about putting aside your inhibitions. FYI, "Calico Critters" (the company that makes it) are called Sylvanian Families everywhere but the US, and are a Japanese company as far as I know, in case that helps you.

>>2810563
Many, many places but to start you off:

miniatures.com
ebay
etsy
YJA auctions

also, check online and find out if there are any miniature doll specialist shops in your area.

Anyway guys, should I get the Sylvanian treehouse? My figures need a summer home and I feel like I could make it work out well with the right amount of customization.

i was planning on painting shading and details a little bit in appropriate areas to make it slightly more "natural" looking (I want a balance between natural and plastic, since it's going to house plastic figures).

possibly then i would add fake flowers, plants (material ones, not plastic) to certain areas, the type that you can find at craft stores. add some fabrics, curtains or wall details. interior would feature some kind of bedroom/lounge and kitchen setup, much like the promo pic (the actual house does not come with any furniture AFAIK which i am fine with as i like decorating to my personal taste)

if i'm feeling ambitious, i would also add a little dollhouse lighting, or even possibly use white/yellow fairy lighting around the roof or at the edge of the balcony, but i'm not sure if that idea would work.

basically just looking for other people's opinions about whether it would be a good project because the thing is just under 200 bucks and i will probably spend another 100-200 on decorating if i get it. money's not the issue as long as the end result is something that would look good, you know?

Actually there's a lot of stuff on the amazon site you linked under related items. However I am canadian and amazon.ca doesn't list half this stuff so thanks for the information.

I know it's about inhibitions, most of collecting isn't really about what is logical to buy in terms of money and shit but...I need to get my shit together to move to a new town I don't know if I should really even be buying shit..> I guess it's not impossible to move. Sort of going on a tangeant.

I'd taken the fact that it might be better scaled to nendoroids into consideration. i own 6-7 nendoroids as well as some mini-nendos, so as a back up plan i could use them in the house as well. i'm more interested in shinki and figmas collecting at the moment which is why i thought of them first, but my nendos need somewhere to live too.

everything in it's right place (*´▽`*)

as this is a children's dollhouse, it took less than 10 minutes to slot everything into place, no glue or cutting required.

i'm actually really impressed with the subtle look of the "wood" parts and roof. I will almost certainly repaint or replace the fake foliage and flowers, and the pond area needs to be changed so that it doesn't look like a big blue blob of good. Also going to prioritse replacing the parasol (or covering it in fabric and toning down the color), as that thing is hideous. Similar plans for the boat as it's just a lump of red plastic right now.

if it makes you feel any better, she's the super basic 2008 Pomock not the enhanced 2009 release. found her on Mandarake a few months ago for 2500 yen (which is about 30 bucks) + shipping so if you want her i recommend checking their site often.

I was also impressed with how it looks out of the box, but definitely want to make it into something more. I've never modified a dollhouse before so I'm a little nervous, hopefully it will turn out to be a fun project.

Awesome, just Awesome, anon, my jelly is overflowing
>It looks like Figmoe Lurker was completely right and this is going to be a Nendo house after all
that isn't a problem, it only means that your Nendos will have a Hell of a cute dollhouse
I didn't have any Sylvanian/Calico Critters stuff, but I remember that in some threads from long ago some anons were saying the that stuff is in scale to the Nendoroids, seems that that info was correct, if you want furniture and/or stuff for your shinkis/figmas search for scale 1/12 or 1 inch scale, which is the one the fit in with these toy figures
>Can't wait to see the modifications. Keep us posted with pics along the way!
I second this

Indeed it's not! I actually own 15 Nendoroids (including Petites) as well as many figures that are Nendo scale or smaller. Plus the smaller shinki and figma girls can still hang around outside or in the top room of the house.

I would still like a house or den for my Shinkis and Figmas, but I wouldn't want to work on that until I'm satisfied with the treehouse home now. If anyone sees something that would be Shinki scale and suit the style of Shinkis though, please post the link my way. I just don't see them in a large, traditional dollhouse. Maybe I'll go for something more abstract like roomboxes mounted on a wall.

by the way, I tested some 1:12 scale furniture I own from miniatures.com (bought it a while back for a basic open room diorama) in the house and it is too big. apparently it's recommended to use 1:16 to 1:18 furniture with Calico Critters if you aren't buying the official furniture (which I didn't decide if I will yet). So if anyone knows of good sites selling doll furniture or accessories on that scale, I'd also be interested in that (I might be missing something but I can't seem to find that scale stocked on miniatures.com...and its not like that's the only site worth buying from anyway)

I'm decent with sewing, painting, adorning and arranging but I've never made furniture before so DIY furniture is probably out of the question for me right now unless I got someone else to custom make it.

oh yeah, and not to ramble about the scale thing but i thought i should clarify: Nendos DO fit 1:12 scale furniture just fine, but the furniture itself barely fits in the house at all. So it is oversized for the house, even though Nendos and Shinkis can fit 1:12, 1:12 cannot fit in the Calico Critters house without looking incredibly oversized and cramped.

just thought i'd clear that up in case anyone else is planning on doing something similar!

yesterday, I went to a Walmart type of store near in my city ( that kind that sell a large range of products) I pass by the toys secction, usually filled with those cheap quality toys, nothing than catch my eye, came across of two, one of which is the reason of this post, was a dollhouse that catch my attention when I crossed the section of girl's toys, judging the dimention it looked that it is in scale with nendos, it comes with a few cheap plastic furniture, and one or two figures,it has a store price of $54, it is tempting , the problem is that I don't have space for a big dollhouse and the fact that I don't own many nendos

I'm pretty sure that Amazon.com will ship to Canada. I could be wrong but I think you just have to pay more. Also Calico Critters/Sylvanian Families is a popular company since about 1985 so it would not surprise me if you could find it in Canadian toy stores (I have seen CC houses in even small toy stores in the US)
>>2815020
thanks for showing me Melissa&Doug, looks like that's the right kind of scale. Appreciate all the other links as well, I'm looking at them now.

I bought a few sets of CC furniture so that i could look at it in person and figure out if it was what i wanted to use in the house. no pics right now but here's some main points:

- even though the furniture is the official scaled furniture, its hard to fit more than ~3 pieces of furniture in any of the rooms without the room looking very cramped
- most CC furniture has square or hard edges, but the rooms in the treehouse are round. this means the furniture cannot line up to the wall properly in most cases
- official CC furniture comes in a variety of sizes. most of it is perfectly scaled for Nendos but some furniture is for the "baby" critters and this furniture only fits Petit Nendo size. chairs are too "low" for most small Busou Shinki/short Figma, they can sit in beds but not lie straight in them. so this confirms that CC is not suitable for figures larger (taller) than Nendoroid.

>>2816486

this is going off the topic of dollhouses but some bootleg Nendos are actually surprisingly good quality.
i think it's not really moral to buy them if you can afford the real ones since that hurts the company business, but if you aren't able to, well it's okay... plus you are still supporting some guy in china who needs bootleg toy money to eat.
i own 1-2 figures that i suspect might be bootlegs or recasts, i did not buy them knowing this [i just started figure collecting then and had no idea about bootlegs]. yet they look good and i enjoy them, and so i feel there's nothing wrong with that.
Konata is one of my favorite Nendos, also the one i wonder about being a bootleg as it happens, i don't suppose you have any non-blurry pictures of yours?
to get closer back to the topic of dollhouse, please enjoy some room porn (not mine)

same here, soldier, the nendo Konata & Haruhi were actually my first two nendos, and by that time I didn't knoe the existence of bootlegs figures, I agree that is always better to buy the original one, only if the original is really expensive or very rare to find it, you should get a bootleg (if it is cheap) or if you want to use the nendo as a base for some custom (pic related), otherwise a bootleg never worth your money IMO

Konata is one of my favorite Nendos, also the one i wonder about being a bootleg as it happens, i don't suppose you have any non-blurry pictures of yours?

I think I take some photos some time back and I will take some pics tomorrow and post them so you can compared to your Konata

Good suggestions.
I should have done more plates, but I was too lazy. It took a while to do as many as I did. Holding them with tweezers & trying to get them to lean correctly was less than fun.
All of the chess pieces are separate. They're metal and the chess board is magnetic. The table has a chessboard pattern printed on it, but I didn't want to mess with all of those loose pieces. I was afraid I might bump the room box or the table it was on. I know they would scatter to the farthest reaches of the room if they rolled out of there.

No, it doesn't. It transforms into a useless heap of plastic. That's toy cameras for you. And yet I keep buying them.

here is a pic a take sometime back of the nendo Konata I own, here you can see the poorly made hair color gradient this bootleg has, this is a easy way to spot if the figure is an original or not

it's cool, I didn't post pictures of mine either. After looking at that link I think mine might not be a bootleg, but I still can't be sure because I can't look at the packaging right now (her box is folded in storage). The main reason I was suspicious was because I can not get her hair seam to fit properly. Maybe it is a GSC manufacturing flaw? Or does she look like a bootleg to you?

Even with the flaws, still one of my favorite Nendos.

oh yeah, and also the stub for her cat ears headband is so bad that it literally has to "balance" on her head- it can NOT slot into her head and be held there. her cat tail which I didn't include in the picture also doesn't fit very well. But the coloring of her hair is more vivid, like the genuine version.

Does anyone know how long shipping from miniatures.com takes? It's been like 2 weeks since I ordered a tea set from them and I don't even know if it's been shipped yet. Their website just tells me it's been "entered" whatever that means. I did get the free catalog from them though.

Where do you live? I live on the East Coast and I ordered from them twice, got the package in less than 5 days each time

I've received orders anywhere from 4 to 9 days after placing them. Usually 4 to 6. A few times it was 7, and once it was 9.
They're located in Georgia, and I'm in New Hampshire.
Their FAQ says to allow at least 24-hours after submission to view your on-line order. If you do not see your order, contact them via email or call customer service.
I hope this helps.

In the toy aisle I stumbled upon these fisher price 'loving family' sets and I really dig them.

Thinking of getting the kitchen set and maybe some of the others.

I believe that your maybe isn't a bootleg as the inside hair piece have a internal transparent piece to connect the face, that's too troublesome to be done by a bootlegger IMO, also my konata comes with the white akira petit nendo, which doesn't disassemble, do your can be disassembled?

/toy/ I need your advice!
I've always loved dollhouses, but I've never done anything more than lloking at them in shops. But seeing this thread made me finally want to try and build/decorate one myself. But, where to start?
The huge amount of stuff available online makes my head spin, and I have no idea what would be a good project for an absolute beginner.

As a student I have neither a huge budget nor a great amount of space. Room boxes seem like an inexpensive way to get started, but I also find the 1/144 houses utterly adorable. I'm guessing because they're so tiny they require more skill?

Are there any Europe based alternatives to miniatures.com? Buying stuff in dollars isn't as cheap as it used to be, and shipping prices will be pretty high.
