Who remembers Discovery Zone? That place kicked so much ass, I swear, if you never went to Discovery Zone when you were a kid then you should just fucking kill yourself right now because you've already missed out on the most excitement and fun you'll ever have in your whole lifetime. Discovery Zone totally owned the shit out of Chucky Cheeses and McDonalds Play-Places and all that other bullshit. If I ever get rich I'm gonna hire someone to build an adult sized Discovery Zone.

I know it's not exactly a toy per-say, but I feel it fits the atmosphere of this board.

DZ was a lot of fun. Never had a birthday there myself, but I attended quite a few. There was also a place in a mall a few cities up called Play Space. It was space themed so everything was painted black, silver, and purple.

The only thing that comes close these days is Pump it Up, but it falls mightily short.

I remember having parties there and we'd have to spend an extra half hour looking for all the fucking kids.

It was a LABYRINTH. If we were sexually active back then, most of the higher up places would have basically been giant orgies, suitable only for those who could brave the journey up there.
>> Anonymous 03/03/08(Mon)09:52 No.51147

I remember going to a Discovery Zone as a kid and just about to go down a long slide that goes directly into a giant ball pit, I noticed a smell, but figured it was just that a smelly kid just went through it. about halfway down the slide I noticed a huge, carfully laid log of shit. I put out my hands against the sides to stop myself and crept back up that slide as hard as my little hands could. I never told anyone about it the rest of the day, and wondered what happened to the kid that would eventually slide right into that shit. I hope they went down head first.

The DZ in my old mall closed down because there had been a number of little girls being raped in the tubes by an unknown person.

I actually remember walking (or rather crawling) into a closed tube. All I saw was a girl no older than 8 in a doggy style position with a man over her, holding her mouth closed while he squirmed. At first I thought it was her father trying to get her out... Why their pants were down was a mystery. Looking back, I realize it was pretty fucked up.

Long story:
Internet - A series of rape and tubes.
Discovery Zone - A series of rape and tubes.

Coincidence?

The only 'ball pit and tube maze' place I ever experienced was the massive multi-tiered one in Sesame Place, which was right across the river in Pennsylvania from where I lived.

There were no Chuckie Cheeses in the area back then and I was way too old for Discovery Zone by the time it came around.

But I spent most of my pre-teen childhood in huge, dark, awesome late 80's/very early 90's arcades so I don't feel much loss.

When I was a little kid, before there were any DZ's in my area, we had a place called the Children's Museum, and it had a tube maze called the Great Escape that kicked a lot of ass. It wasn't as big as a DZ, but the tubes were made out of solid materials instead of translucent colored plastic so the inside was dark, and it was lit with colored lights and shit. There was also a section where all the walls were mirrors, which kicked ass. The first time I ever went, some asshole told me there was a T-Rex living inside the maze and I got scared and wouldn't go inside, but the next time I went there my mom assured me that it was safe. I used to go there every month or so for a few years, but then the place closed. I cried.

DK? DK!!! it's DZ! you fuck!
I had a birthday at DZ once I remember comletely ignoring my presents and guests to play in the jungle gym I used to climb those fucking nylon net walls I always had the staff yelling at me to get off it I loved climbing the walls on the inside of the ball pit all the way to the ceiling and dropping into the pit. I remember one time I was playin that dinosaur-themed game where you flick the token to win tickets And the machine just emptied it's entire roll of tickets to me ( some sort of glitch.) I remember before they closed they had a laser tag game based on the men in black cartoon and after it closed it was briefly turned into a arcade called Q-zar but now it's a furniture store. thinking back I think running, climbing, and jumping around in DZ is why I like Parkour now fuck I miss DZ
>> Anonymous 03/04/08(Tue)18:03 No.53767
If I was going to do a DZ-type thing today, I'd make a few changes.

More exits (for fire emergencies and the like. Also, because everyone loves slides.)

More clear things (For a few reasons. Finding kids, easier to see from the ground so less chance of sex in the tubes, etc)

No ball pits (Fun as they are, they're also health and safety disasters... as are the tubes as a whole, really. Oh well, that can be my next thing.)

Figure out some way to clean the tubes thoroughly every night.

Some of them DO reduce fun a bit, I'll admit, but the whole safety thing is an issue, too.
>> Anonymous 03/04/08(Tue)18:05 No.53774
Oh, for the clear bits: More of the netting-based rooms might work, plus larger, more common windows (which they had to let in light, mostly, I think.)

We used to have a DZ in the same shopping center as a Toys R Us. Went to DZ a few times for birthday parties and stuff, and went to TRU also, for the hell of it.
Now, It's a gym for women and partially a Levitz, which is closing soon.

THE MEMORIES AHHH SO AWESOME

any Newenglandfags remember going to Antics before it closed in the late 90's?

FUCKING LASER TAG AND HUGE SLIDES HELL YES.

Also, the maze things were mostly nets that I liked to climb upside down on and stuff. There was also some crazy sphere you could sit in and use a steering wheel to move the whole room around.

The memories...

Man, haven't thought about DZ in years... Of course, like everyone else, I was seriously butthurt when it closed down, but reading over some of the posts here and thinking about it from a grown-up perspective I understand why it had to close.

I mean, seriously, how do you evacuate a bunch of kids in that age range who are #1: Having a blast and don't want to leave and #2: are somewhere in the middle of a ball pit or series of tubes and probably aren't sure how to get out anyway? Good Lord, the fire marshals must have been sniffing around those places 24/7 for an excuse to shut them down.

And that one post earlier about little girls getting raped in the mazes? A story like that, even if it had been made up, is enough to ruin a business like that if it gets around to a few parents.

DZ was incredible, and I don't regret a single minute I spent there (that I can remember... I suspect I might've had a couple run-ins with bullies in the ball pit but I can't recall for sure). That being said, I get why it's gone.

I NEVER wore socks when I was in there. I loved going barefoot as a kid. That and eating everything I got my hands on is why my immune system rocks.

Who remembers Busy Kids? That place kicked so much ass, I swear, if you never went to Busy Kids when you were a kid then you should just fucking kill yourself right now because you've already missed out on the most excitement and fun you'll ever have in your whole lifetime. Even moreso than Discovery Zone. Busy Kids totally owned the shit out of Chucky Cheeses and McDonalds Play-Places and all that other bullshit. If I ever get rich I'm gonna hire someone to build an adult sized Busy Kids.

I know it's not exactly a toy per-say, but I feel it fits the atmosphere of this board.
>> Anonymous 03/05/08(Wed)10:29 No.55383
We never had DZ in Australia but there were many like them.
I went to one once where the series of tubes actually dumped you out into quite large rooms with rather opp shopped couches in them. The best thing was that there was no way to get up to the rooms other than the tubes so the next time our holidays group went there we all stole our lunches out of the box and vanished up in there for the day.

Fellow Mainer? In my /toy/?

Yah - Jokers is okay. Its about as close as you'll get to the classic DZ feel. They've got a 4 story playhouse thing there with alot of the same things from DZ - the roller slides, giant ball pit with a mountain in the middle, series of coloured tubes. Jokers is also the only place in southern Maine where you can get Mr. Pibb (fun fact).

But, yah - DZ. I havn't thought about that place in 10-12 someodd years, and suddenly all the memories come flooding back. I remember the commercials, the times I went there. I think I can even just recall the feeling of hard plastic on my little child hands. Ahh, what fun.

I wish they made adult-sized DZ style places. I'd love to crawl around in some brightly coloured tubes and pretend to be a kid for an afternoon.

You can't get rid of ball bits. They're the centerpiece to those things. You build the tubes around the ball pits. To propose getting rid of them is preposterous.

You would need to pull the entire thing apart, bleach every ball, make sure nothing but balls goes back in, and such. Ever night.

It's the only way to get terrified parents in there, and there are enough of them that if you don't, there's NO WAY you will survive financially.

... Or do a water park with DZ-like tubes and stuff. Then replace the ball pits with chlorinated water. That might work.
>> Anonymous 03/05/08(Wed)16:58 No.55719
>>55718

Or you just say you do and don't. I forget that OCD is normal these days. But c'mon, I mean if kids can't play outside they should at least be able to run around in tubes and plastic balls.

The point is though, the ball pit is key. You can't open a place like that without a ball pit. It just doesn't work.

Sadly your grown-up body and mind prevents you from enjoying them. You no longer are able to clamber around for hours without going "fuck this, my legs ache" and your mind isn't quite as easily distracted.

Maybe just climbing around would be boring, but I think that simple tag with a few people in DZ would still be fun as hell, even for adults. When we would play tag as kids it was always cool because since you couldn't run upright through the tubes, it was less about endurance and more about strategy and memorizing the layout.

SOLUTION TO THE CLEANING PROBLEM FOR THE BALLPIT:

ADD A FUCKING TRAPDOOR.

BALLS DROP DOWN AT NIGHT, GET RUN THRU CLEANSING SOLUTION, THEN YOU JUST PACK THEM UP AND DROP THEM BACK IN.

NOW FOR THE TUBES:
WELL FUCK. CLEANING THEM ONCE A WEEK SHOULD BE ENOUGH I THINK.

ALSO, DO A FULL BODY CHECK ON EVERYONE ENTERING, AS TO PREVENT NEEDLES ETC.

We had a couple of DZs in San Antonio, there was also this place called Pear Apple County Fair. I went there once, it was dark as shit and it gave off this real creepy vibe the whole time.

I played a Gallagher arcade game, and then some dude tried to take my tickets and exchange them for "big" tickets.

There was some place in North Star mall that was like DZ, it was pretty big, I don't remember much about it though.

we've got something here a lot like DZ (here is chicago, west burbs) called fun zone or something. they have something that isnt quite as big but still huge, and they let adults in there, mostly so kids can be supervised and dont get raped in the tubes. i went there last year and got my fat ass stuck and wound up breaking a whole section trying to get loose.

also, its HELL on your knees, even when i was a kid that shit hurt

DZ was cool, but leaps and bounds was better
