if you really don't understand why people have an issue with this, you are a moron.

did you know that before the RIAA and MPAA came around, you were not committing the crime of copyright infringement unless you profited from it? So lets say Joe the dirt farmer wants to have a new plow, so he builds one using his neighbors as a template. His neighbors plow is copyrighted. However our good man Joe hasn't infringed on that copyright because he is making the plow for his own use. Now if Joe were to decide to make a couple plows and sell them to his neighbors, then he would be infringing on the copyright.

Do you understand now? Copyright law is a real life example of the Slippery Slope political theory.

There's a reason the only time it's caled theft is in the press, not the courts.
1) theft, being criminal, means that there are high standards of evidence
2) being a criminal case, the state can and will provide defence council
3) the punishments are much lower for theft (steal a 10-track CD in calif. its $1000 MAX, infrignge the copyrights of those 10 tracks once, and you're looking at a range of penalties from $7,500 to $1.5M
4) theft not only implies but requires actual loss. To date, not a single PENNY in losses have ever been proven. With all this 'theft' around, most of these industries have actually seen sales skyrocket.
5) in criminal law, there's due process and a requirement to a speedy trial. In civil law, as long as it's within the timelimit (7 years) they can keep trying to force you to settle, or else they start (or carry on) with an expensive long winded legal case, making the legal fees higher than the settlement offer, 'encouraging' settlement.

These are just some of the reasons that Big Copyright doesn't want copyright infringement to actually be deemed theft anywhere but in public opinion (certainly not in court)

industry average is about 10% per sale until contractual fees (recording costs, paying the label, etc) are covered, then the band gets most of the profits. however, many bands are boned by the contracts to begin with, and see nothing from cd sales

concert tickets and merchandise more directly go to the artists

The people who run TPB are obnoxious and they make casual torrent users look like dicks.

Look here's the thing. Digital piracy is wrong. It is absolutely wrong. It's the exact same thing as theft, and it should be illegal.

But I pirate shit all the time. I do it but I don't pretend it's right. I know I'm being immoral. I'd just rather have shit for free than feel moral.

But TPB are hypocrites. They're selling stolen goods and pretending it's okay. More than that, they think it's a human right to steal and sell stolen goods. That's ridiculous.

You steal from the motion picture industry and you're all shocked and indignant when the MPAA or law enforcement gets on your case? You child.

what they do is they keep fighting until they win a small victory- say, you don't make copying illegal, but you do make it illegal to circumvent any copy-protection technology the company builds into its product

never mind that this technology prevents you from exercising your right to make copies of your media.

never mind that making it impossible for someone to exercise a right is scarcely different from taking it away altogether

laws change. especially in cultures where you may buy them

I was never going to buy your music or movies anyway.

By downloading a digital copy I am not harming the original producer in any way because there was zero chance I'd ever buy their product in the first place.

Their "losses" (BTW their profits have NEVER been higher) assume that everyone that downloads their product would have otherwise purchased it at full retail price. That is a faulty assumption.

If I buy an apple and instead of throwing away the seeds I plan them and 10 years from now I have an apple producing mature tree is Safeway going to sue me for copying their product? Oh wait, Monsanto is doing this with "terminator" seeds that cannot reproduce.

Humanity is fucked.

Yes, you will probably need rapidshare premium to download the really big files, like big .iso files of games or movies. Since rapidshare free accounts limits to 200mb per day or something.

It's probably safer to visit warez sites from china than any other country now as I see it, they seem to embrace piracy for some reason.

No one has gotten caught for downloading from rapidshare now either, since rapidshare is hosted in germany too, which also is very internet liberal..

You might want to read some press releases, such as the one from the MPAA 2 weeks ago, saying '2009 was the best year ever' - funny, with all that 'theft' going on, you'd think it'd be poor.

In fact, over the last 10 years (since P2P became popular) box office figures have never been so good. Same with music. In the UK, music sales are 50% UP on 10 years ago (and these are the industry's own figures)

Oh, and let's not forget all the independent studies that show that p2p-ers buy MORE in general.

Or remember that when they were saying the same things about VCRs that they're saying about the internet, 5 years later where was the majority of their income coming from? oh yeah, VHS sales....

Time to separate the reality, from the PR bullshit dude.

CD sales are at an all-time low. Record companies are also reporting record profits. How does this work? (Legal downloads are working?)

As to the movie industry, they make me laugh. They didn't give a shit about piracy until the recording industry told them to. They're making record profits as more and more people go to the cinemas regardless of how high the cinemas jack up the price. Especially with the new 3D gimmick that doesn't fuck up the colors. People see a movie they liked and want to see it on the big screen, simple as that. Media sales have never been important to the film industry.

In any case, DMCA is bullshit that needs repealed, copyright itself needs a major overhaul, and congress needs to stop sucking the dicks of the big businesses that throw thousands to millions of dollars at them.

If you pirate something that you would otherwise not have watched/played/listened to, there should be no problem.

1. You remove no original copy, thus no value is lost.
2. You would not have given profit to the company even if you didn't pirate what you pirated.
3. By getting in touch with the product of a company, you get in touch with the company, and if they did a good enough job you just may decide to become their client, BRINGING them profit.

>On avarage, the big movie companies with a budget over 100 mil almost always gets atleast a quadrupple in profits.

Here's a fun thing. If you take the budgets of the top 10 films each year, and add them up, when do you think it topped a billion? Answer, 2003. REALLY funny thing. Two of those films LOST money.
Terminator 3. Budget $200M. Box office $150M
Matrix Revolutions. Budget $150M. Box Office $139M

in 1991, Terminator 2 cost $100M. 8 of the other top 9 were also published. Even with the T2 that works out at $40M/film for those 9. excluding T2, it's $32.5M

So erm, your claims are bullshit.

Both speeding and murder are illegal. One gets you a ticket, the other gets you life-long incarceration or a death sentence.

Now, the one reason there is no death sentence for speeding (and a small margin would love to see this happen) is that there is simply not enough money to sustain these extreme measures.

The same is true for copyright infringement. The only difference being that the small margin concerned DOES have enough money to impose such drastic punishment, and this is only the beginning of the end of net-neutrality.
