It's completely assembled and mastered, unlike the bootlegs that have been floating around. The only thing that is unfinished is that a few songs are instrumental when they were originally supposed to have vocals. Wilson said the album was %90 recorded, just needed a few more vocals recorded and to be assembled (which was nearly impossible with 60's recording tech).
>> Anonymous 10/27/11(Thu)22:40 No.20792238
You can listen to 30 second clips of each song on amazon. It sounds amazing, way better than the bootlegs.

Am I the only one who thinks the album artwork is shit? Yes I know it was the original artwork planned in 67 but it's just not good. They should have gone with the 2004 Brian Wilson version cover, just replace Brian Wilson with Beach Boys.

The second one has previews for the whole box. The sound quality is amazing compared to the Sea of Tunes stuff on the Unsurpassed Masters series, which used to be the highest fidelity representation of just the sessions, with no attempted assembly, but and even that stuff can sometimes sound muffled, hissy, staticy, or distorted. And there's a lot of stuff there which quite obviously hasn't been bootlegged.

It was intended to be the follow up album to Pet Sounds, which is often in the top 10 in greatest albums of all time lists. It was probably the most hyped album ever at the time and it never came out.

The music was extremely ahead of it's time. The album orchestrations were so complex and intricate that Brian Wilson literally had a mental breakdown trying to assemble the album with the insufficient recording technology of the 60's (all the drugs he was doing didn't help with his mental issues either).

It literally killed Brian Wilson's creativity, he pretty much gave up on writing music for decades.

There are a bunch of bootlegs of what they recorded and they are amazing. This is finally a complete, assembled version of the album out of everything they had recorded. It's as close to the original vision we are ever gonna get.
>> Anonymous 10/27/11(Thu)22:54 No.20792474
So how is this going to compare to the Smile that came out some years ago? That one was pretty good, but not really amazing.

Musically it will probably be similar, maybe a little more psychedelic. The thing that's gonna put it over the top is the original Beach Boys vocals, which if you listened to Pet Sounds, you know how fucking jizz inducing those melodies are. The 2004 version had some ok Beach Boys impersonators and a 60 something year old Brian Wilson who's voice had lost a lot.

More like,
>Brian Wilson records literally the greatest and most experimental album ever over the course of six months
>The Beach Boys think its shitty and refuse to record vocals for most of the songs
>massive hype
>Brian takes so long to put it together that he and everyone who was supporting him loses faith in it
>mixing and mastering an album like this would have taken at least two years
>shelves it a couple weeks before Sgt. Pepper comes out
>realizes that if he finished it, he would have gone down in history as bigger than The Beatles
>copes with the fact by telling himself the music was shit and wouldn't have sold anyway
>even talking about the album gives sends him into a panic attack for the next thirty-five years
>gains 100lb
>smoking ruins his voice forever
>when the band realizes their careers depend on him, they decide to motivate him into writing music with hamburgers
>is addicted to almost every drug by 1980
>his psychiatrist steals millions of dollars from him
>suffers brain damage from elephant tranquilizers prescribed by his psychiatrist
>gets kicked out of The Beach Boys
>tries to attend the session for Kokomo in 1988, but they tell him to go fuck himself
>his solo album is released a week later, nobody notices because of Kokomo's success

>hated Pet Sounds
First off, there's something wrong with you. Or you just didn't hear the album correctly, which means listening to either the mono or stereo 40th anniversary edition with good headphones, at a somewhat high volume. At low volume or low quality it just sounds like elevator music, but when you're actually hearing it, the dense instrumentation comes through and it's all astounding. I prefer the stereo version even though Brian mixes in mono simply because there's so much instrumentation and so many voices that the separation makes it easier to digest. Mono seems flat.

But anyway so even if you really don't like Pet Sounds (which doesn't seem humanly possible to me), there is a chance you might like Smile. It's totally different. Totally different from anything The Beach Boys ever made, and totally different from anything else you've ever heard. It's about as 'far out' as you can go. Far out is the simplest description I can give of it.

Everything was recorded in a modular style. It was the first album produced in the modern way, where you come up with tons of small sections and combine them into one whole, layering the production, a kind of collage of sound. Brian Wilson changed the way that you can use the studio, and the way people record music in general.

The problem is that he could only finish about five songs this way in the amount of time it would normally take for an experienced #1 hit maker like him to finish three albums. The only two that were really absolutely finished before the project was shelved were Heroes and Villains and Good Vibrations, both singles, only one being generally well-received. The time sink probably came from the technology of the time. Smile was just too far ahead, and required advanced editing capabilities that didn't come around until just a few years ago.

Or, at least that's how Mark Linett describes it. According to him, Capitol has been trying to do a box set like this since the 80's, which is when Smile stuff originally started leaking, but it just wasn't doable with analog tape edits. They were able to do the Pet Sounds Sessions, but Smile is more like assembling a movie.

Well the songs that were close enough to done were Vegetables, Wind Chimes, Cabinessence, Heroes and Villains, and Good Vibrations. Vegetables got several sort of finalized mixes. Surf's Up is almost there. Really the whole album is musically complete, lyrically only about 90% there. By that I mean that anything instrumental you hear on Brian Wilson Presents Smile is there, with much much more that either didn't make it into to any Smile-destined track or ended up unused. Lyrically though, BWPS has probably a few more stanzas than Smile. The tracks I can think of right off hand that The Beach Boys didn't record lyrics for are do you like worms and love to say dada, but other than that, it's all recorded.

But being all recorded doesn't mean all assembled, and like I said, the modular recording process arrived too early, and the editing tools available have only in the past few years reached the point where it's actually possible to put it together.

Love is reported to have objected to Van Dyke Parks' oblique lyrics to Smile, reserving particular scorn for the song "Cabinessence." During a heated argument at a recording session, Love demanded that Parks explain the song's meaning; Parks demurred and walked out, which led to Parks officially terminating his partnership with Wilson. Although Love allegedly had nothing personal against Parks, he apparently feared the lyrics were too abstract for a Beach Boys record.

The second part of the sentence is why I prefer the stereo. I wasn't commenting on why Brian mixes in mono. I said even though he mixes in mono, this is why I like the stereo.

However, while the fact that he's deaf in one ear does have a little to do with it, the reason he actually mixes in mono is that it gives him the most control over what you hear. With stereo, you can only guarantee the listener is going to receive it as you intend when they're using a decent set of headphones, but if they're hearing it through speakers, there's so many variables that they're just not going to hear what you intend.

He also was aware that the market of the time was AM mono radio.

Untrue. Wonderful and Wind Chimes were the only two that master mix was finished and deemed the final version. Good Vibrations was never intended as part fo the project, and H&V wasn't actually completed until the project was dead in the grave.

I don't think you realize how far ahead Smile was. Brian Wilson practically INVENTED 1967 with Pet Sounds.

All derivatives of Pet Sounds/Good Vibrations. I would link about ten more songs, but I'm pressed for time. Imagine what 1968 would have been like if Smile, an album thousands of leagues above Pet Sounds, would have provoked. For fuck's sake, Pepper was Paul McCartney's conscious attempt at replicating Pet Sounds. He played that record to the other Beatles ad infinitum when it came out.

If The Beatles heard Smile before Pepper was released, they would have flipped their shit. McCartney pissed himself when he heard Pet Sounds, so imagine what his reaction would be to Smile. Remember that before Pepper, The Beatles were on their way out. They stopped touring a year before, and Lennon made a lot of people mad for his Jesus comments. Smile would have changed the industry forever, and Pepper would have been seen as a Beach Boys knockoff.

>>20793040
There's a reason why The Beach Boys are compared to every band associated with indie rock since 1990. Is it even a coincidence that Smile bootlegs began to circulate around the late '80s?

By the way, Thom Yorke has cited The Beach Boys as one of his primary influences.

Yes folks, it ALL began with Brian Wilson. The Beatles have been ripping him off since 1963. If you need even more convincing...

Smile is the pinnacle of classical music.

And I know that's probably not the word I'm looking for here, but what I mean is that it's the best possible extent of sounds that people make with real objects and record in a room with microphones, you know, analog stuff, nothing synthesized. And no auto tuned vocals, no effects at all, save for what you can do with analog tape, echoes and shit.

It was so far ahead of its time that it needed digital editing to actually come together in a timely manner, but given an infinite amount of time to assemble it, it could have happened even without the technology. So it's like the apoapsis of the quality of music that humans can make with objects and their voices.

The only way you can make crazier sounds is with a computer.

>Another source of problems came from The Beach Boys deciding to file a lawsuit against Capitol Records to start their own label, Brother Records. This came at a terrible time when Wilson was trying to finish the album and, right along the way, The Beatles were working on Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. In April 1967, Wilson — who was suffering growing mental problems — was "deeply affected" by hearing a tape of the Sgt. Pepper song "A Day in the Life", which Paul McCartney played to him in Los Angeles. Soon after, Smile was abandoned, and Wilson would not return to complete it until 2004, when it was released as a Brian Wilson album of the same name.

in the dvd, it says him, and a friend (who's name i can't remember) said they were going to a burger place, and on the way heard Strawberry Fields, Wilson pulled over and said "this is it" and the other guy, (i think tony asher) said "what?" and then Brian said "this is what i wanted to make, this sound" then sat their and just started laughing, as they were both incredibly stoned.

Both events are possible, but i never heard about that one, That must have happened after this one. interesting. there was also the Ms O'learys cow incident.

exactly.

also, anyone interested in the Ms O'learys Cow story.

when they were recording the song, which was about the legend of the cow that kick started the chicago fire, when brian started to record it, he wanted to set up the atmosphere, so he got a bunch of toy fireman helmets, and got a trashcan, and put a fire in it. the dat after recording i believe, a warehouse down the street from the studio burnt to the ground, Brian felt it was his fault and became paranoid. it's just a story i find interesting. the dude was having a lot of bad luck.

At 60%

so far, it's all pieces we've all alreday had... sound quality is exceptional though. The acoustic reverse appregrios on Worms is so clear--it was always in the background... The fuzz bass on the chorus is clear.... The Kini waka poola part, you can hear some things I've never heard before in the backing track.

Don't really like this H&V. To me the Cantina version was THE version. All other versions are post-breakdown Wilson and are thus not SMiLE versions is you know what I mean...

I'm In Great Shape, the demo is flown in, kinda weird how did they did it. Same with Barnyard. Not sure I like it. I did better synchs of Surf's Up myself.

Less but better quality vocals on this one.

The only thing I don't like it is they didn't change Good Vibrations. It very closely resembles the single version. It lacks Tony Asher's original lyrics, the gotta keep those lovin good vibrations a-happenin part and a few others, etc.

Everything else I'm not really upset with, I mean it's exactly what I've heard just in perfect quality and with some stuff I haven't heard, edited better than prior bootlegs. Plus the other discs will have many many goodies and different versions of shit that will be probably more awesome than this. Just having the album is more like a teaser for the box really.

Don't mean to turn this into an interrogation or anything, but

WHERE did this link come from? I mean nobody has it, google doesn't even know what to make of it, all of the aggregate filehost search sites haven't seen a file with this name on any site including sendspace, it isn't on any private tracker, etc. And why not post the whole first disc? And this appears to be a purchased audio file, that would make this a digital download version, meaning everyone else has also already gotten their download, meaning it should be on every site already, in full, but it isn't. So what's with that?

Just so many questions about this.

Oh wow so you're going to go from hearing this, the real deal first, to then hearing the re-recorded and lyrically complete Brian Wilson Presents Smile version next.

that's so weird man it's like you're living in a parallel universe

I couldn't agree more.

I always thought Brian was crazy for thinking SMiLE was better than Pet Sounds. I loved BWPS a lot but I thought Pet Sounds always had that extra something, and I've finally figured out what that was; the Beach Boys. Now that's changed, and I have never been so happy to admit that I was wrong.

Brian, shine on you crazy motherfucking diamond.

I was the original person who posted I got it from this guy on last.fm when I saw he was scrobbling the album: http://www.last.fm/user/K1ngSh0t

When I asked him where he got it, he never answered. I doubt he's the original source. Have the other discs seriously not leaked yet? Wow. Thousands of people have already purchased it, so I'm actually a little mad about it. What the fuck are you guys waiting for? Rip it already for crying out a loud... ;_;

Nick Walusko, part of The Wondermints along with Darian Sanahaja. That guy is the reason why we're even able to listen to Smile right now.
