Hey /mu/, let's write a song!

First, the tempo. First person to post any tempo between 20 and 400 decides it. Begin!

Now, the key in which the song is in. We won't be constricted to a single key, of course, but the next person to post a key or mode decides which key or mode we will base our song around!

I will somehow combine these three ideas.

I see we have a dulcimer/tuba intro. That can be played at our extremely slow 21 BPM tempo and then we can do a tempo change up to something more reasonable for the main song, if you guys would like that. Also, since the verse is using C-Em-Am, next poster decides what chords/notes/articulations/so forth we will use for the intro! Take your time and make something nice, because I'll probably pick the most original/creative piece instead of the first poster. Remember, you're writing for two parts- a tuba and a dulcimer. Begin!

It can be symbolic of a deeper need to find true emotional contact - for someone to "answer the phone" the phone rings, and rings, as the writer tries to make that connection, but is never answered, and is left unanswered at the end of the song.

It would work well if the phone was somewhat monotonous and low throughout the entire song.

I think to contrast the monotony of the rest of the song, during the solo, the phone should ring high, in a way that symbolizes something that's insisting; that phone needs you to answer it, and at the end of the solo, it sadly returns to the monotonous.

you could put it up on soundcloud?

Or if you upload it here, someone else could just put it up

for example, just make an account if you don't already have one
you could decide the name now so people can save it for later
e.g.

soundcloud.com/mu18167878
soundcloud.com/thesongthatmumade
something like that
or anything else that isn't taken

that way, people can write down the address and when it finally gets uploaded they will still be able to go have a listen even if the thread has died

Well, like poetry, with the words rhyming, so should certain other things. Have the verses be the same time signature, things like the bridge, the intro, the solo, those can be in different time signatures, but the verses should be consistent, it's the Melodie that you keep coming back to in your head.

Hmmm, I suggest a 4 part vocal harmony,

2 parts (or choir sections), one singing the root note and the other singing a 5th above, over the song's base chord progression.

then the other 2 voices will do two things:

one will be a male voice (i'm hoping you have this option) this voice will start on the root note of each chord and proceed upward in the ionian mode of the particular chord you're on, in an alternating 3rds lick. (Ie, 123 234 345 456)

then the Female lead voice will belt out over the top of this the 7th not of the chord you're on, and half way through the duration of that chord, start a vibrato of a half step up from the 7th chord, making the undertonality a major 7th alternating with the 7th, this will have an almost "haunting" feel, and with the male's part, it should sound quite good.

then the second time through the progression, have the male lead's voice do that same thing, but alternating down from an octave higher than his original note, descending in the same patern,

the female's voice should end here belting out a really... powerful note. Idk. I'm spent

where's my cappuccino?

well, I think the first 2 parts are pretty straight forward.

Ionian mode is basically starting on the first note in the scale.

so if the chord were C major:

E|------------------------------------
B|------------------------------------
G|------------------------------------
D|-----------------------------------------7
A|----------7-----7-8-7-8-10-8-10---------------
E|--8-10----10-----------------------------

also make sure you change key with the chord progression, I know it sounds wierd, but it's harmony.

so if you switch to Em, it would look like

E|------------------------------------
B|------------------------------------
G|------------------------------------
D|-----------------------------------------0
A|----------------0----0-2-0-2-3-2-3-
E|--0-2-3-2-3----3--------------------------

etc.

from there it should be able to see how the descending part goes, keep in mind, those are not the octaves for it to be in, those are just the notes in the progression.

for the female vocal part it should be farely easy

for example if you're on the Cmaj chord

(032010) or something similar. this is on guitar, btw.

D|---8~~~~~~~898989 kind of thing.

I really suck at explaining it through tabs and normal music notation is too hard to type, with ascii code and such.

but I think I've communicated what I need to with this and the last post.
