Does anyone have an electronic copy of one of Tao Lin's books? I know he's hated here, but I'd like to check out his writing myself without giving him any money. My local library has Richard Yates and eeeee eee eeee, but they're both checked out.

There really is no published author (still living) who is quite as bad as Tao Lin.

Sure, there are worse writers in romance and YA fiction (pic related) but none of them command any sway in the literary world. Tao Lin, for some reason, does.

The monotony is the point. The prose is trying to accomplish the same thing Joyce's Portrait did; reflecting the personalities of the characters. Characters are uninteresting and awkward? It's mirrored in the prose and accurately portrays a certain group of people well. In addition, it's a reaction to the recent trend of 'how much shit can i fit into this novel?' This stuff isn't complex, and doesn't try to be.

But whatever, yes Tao isn't the greatest writer of the 21st century (better than Franzen lol), but it's interesting writing that's trying something different.

This is really one of the most encouraging threads ever posted on /lit/.

You think your writing is bad? You think you're inept as an author? Well, look at this shit that got published. People buy this trash. And they read it and enjoy it.

If this can get published, ANYTHING can get published.

this gets at the crux of the matter i thihnk

like it can be as interesting conceptually as it wants and it is but at the end of the day i enjoy enjoying reading too much to read "interesting" reading that doesn't put any of the interesting on the page itself to interest me when i read

Author Tao Lin sold his next novel to Vintage Books over the weekend, Mr. Lin's agent Bill Clegg confirmed. The book was sold following an auction among publishers last week, though neither would confirm the amount paid.

"Taipei, Taiwan," a paperback original, will be a fictionalized but largely autobiographical account of the 28-year-old New York-based author's life. "A 25-year-old has a failed relationship, experiences drug-induced 'depression,' gets married, and feels like his life has taken on a forward movement toward death," Mr. Lin explained in an email. "I predict I'll spend more time on this book than any previous book and view it as my 'magnum opus.'"

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

I keep trying to rationalize this somehow, to find meaning in the work or to decide for sure that it is absolute and total shit and I no longer have to keep looking. Is that what he's trying to accomplish?

Fuck this, Homestuck is so much simpler. I'm fucking off to HSG again where the shit is obviously shit and I don't have to worry about missing all the deep literary meaning behind Ovipositive or something.

No, it doesn't sound interesting.

But, one can't assert that Tao Lin is broke or that there isn't a literary sect that (inexplicably) buys and reads his books.

Unless the WSJ has their facts wrong, it seems like his career is taking off.

WSJ: Have you ever met Bill Clegg "IRL?"

Tao Lin: No.

WSJ: Have you ever G-chatted with Bill Clegg?

Tao Lin: No.

WSJ: Do you feel happy about the deal?

Tao Lin: Yes, I'm very happy. Vintage/Knopf publishes most of my favorite writers: Lorrie Moore, Joy Williams, Ann Beattie, Bret Easton Ellis.

The main problem with Tao Lin is that he tries so hard to be weird and quirky and different that he ends up being boring. Either that or English isn't his first language and he would write exponentially better in Taiwanese.

itt i realise that 95% of people on /lit/ are jaded idiots who actually know nothing about literature, and then i guffaw at how ironic it is when they all hate on pseudo intellectuals and hipsters when it's quite obvious they are those themselves, just three or four layers deeper drenched in vapid bias than the standard, and then i leave and never come back except to read tar because i like to support people trying to get better at the craft, but i am also reminded of how much hate these people will get from those sad, sad multilayered pseudohipsters who are so insecure they must project their fears onto someone trying something they're too scared too, so scared they will fail and suffer the same negativity, and then i realise how truly horrible the human heart can be, and i feel extreme levels of pity for you all because i know you're too stupid to help it, or you've simply been raised wrong or experienced unlucky things and lash out at everything from bitterness and confused, and

They're impossible to find. Which is odd because his fanbase is mainly internet-based people and his stuff is on many ebook stores, so all one would have to do is buy, transfer, and upload... if you know what I mean.
