Yo, first time on the board.

I just finished riding my bicycle from Hamiltton, Ontario to Vancouver BC. It is about 4500 km, and took me 42 days, riding for about 35 of them.

It was the best experience of my life. I slept on the side of the TransCanada Highway almost every night in my tent. I am now in Vancouver, and I found a job after 2 days of looking. Chilling right now in my new place.

Any questions? Oh, and would you consider me fit?

If you're not 'fit', you certainly have ambition and endurance, and that can do just as well. Found a gym yet?

I have some cuts on my ass, but I was able to make it without riding shorts(rode in my jeans) and with my stock saddle. Here is my bike.

Thanks. Never been to a gym in my life. I now ride around Stanley Park every day. Vancouver is really bike friendly.

Ride for 150 km and I think you will sleep just fine. I used to be unable to sleep easily, but I was out like a light every night on my trip.

Pic is a friendly prairie dog that followed me for a couple km. It herded some cows along the way which tripped me out.

Lots of bread and peanut butter. Granola. Occasionally stop for a burger and fries. Couple beers a day, if I could fit them.

I traveled heavy, because I was moving out to Vancouver. I sold almost everything I own, but still had between 75 and 100 pounds on my bike. Front and back panniers. I didn't see anyone else with as much shit. Bike repair tools, food, laptop, hard drive, psp, toiletries, clothes, towel, blanket, tent, spare tire, etc.

>>8051631

That is me in the pics. I met a guy doing the same thing, so we rode together for a few days before I had to keep going.

I was setting up camp one evening, only to look up the tree near me and see a giant black bear making its way down. I got the fuck out of there.

>>8051692

Answered above.

>>8051707

I caught up to this guy around my 10th day. We rode together a bit in Ontario, then I went ahead. I took 2 days off in Winnipeg because my knees were getting bad, and when I got back on the road, I caught up to him again, so we rode together for around a week, then I went ahead just before Calgary and never saw him again.

No I do not lift. I do not work out just to work out. I ride my bike, and I am generally active. I stretch a little but, and if I had a pull up bar I would use it.

I eat whatever I feel like, drink for enjoyment, vaporize, and generally enjoy my life. I am down to 15 bucks to my name until I get paid, so eating right now is mostly at the Seek Temples in Van. Fuck yeah free food.

I have a few questions:

How old are you?
Did you still have a bank account when you left, or were you carrying all your savings in cash?
Did anyone bother you for sleeping on the side of the road/did you have to get a license/permit?
Do you have any family?

27 years old.

I still have the same bank account I always had. I left with 650 bucks, and when I got here, I maxed out my credit card(500 dollar limit) for one months rent. I also went fully into my 150 dollar overdraft on my chequeing account.

Never was bothered camping out. My tent was a 1 man, and I would just find some trees and set up.

I have a family that I hadn't spoke to for a couple years. I told my sister 2 days before I left. My parents found out when I was already a couple weeks in. My friends found out when I started posting pictures on-line.

>>8051946

I have always rode in jeans. I wore a pair of long-johns as well because it was freezing almost every night for the first month. I was thinking about wearing cycling gear, but I'm not a faggot so I decided against it. No sunglasses, no gloves, so helmet or hat. Just my clip-in shoes and an iron will.

Everyone was amazing the entire way. I had a lady come up and talk to me while I was eating some fruit outside a grocery store in Marathon, On and ask me where I was going, etc, and then offer me a room, shower, and laundry. I stayed there and left the next morning. Little things like that will stick with me.

Riding on the shoulder of the Trans was good, lots of encouraging honks, no jerks. All the douchey drivers are found in the larger cities. Not Vancouver, though. This fucking place is a bike nirvana. I was originally headed out to Vancouver Island, but one day in Vancouver was enough for me. I never want to leave. If I ever do, I will be coming back.

What sort of training did you do man? I love long bike trips, I've never done one that long though. I went on a thing we have here in Australia called the Great Victorian bike ride, it went for 10 days, that's the longest I've gone.

Hey, dude. I have a friend who is, next year, going to the south of France where he has an uncle who works on private luxury yachts for half of the year, and lives anywhere he wants in Europe for the remaining 6 months.

It's pretty much just mercenary work, applying to each ship to see if they need kitchenhands, navigators, etc, and you're provided with accommodation and food on top of your salary.

You should look into it sometime, I've heard that France is one of the best hubs for doing it, but there are other places too. Good luck!

Also, OP. How long did you train for? You're alpha as fuck.

No direct training. I was attending college, and working full time, and I would bike to both from where I lived. To get to college, I would carry my bike up 300 steps, and 300 down afterwords. I had to do this to live, it was not training. This was for 2 years before I left. Before that, I only rode to get around so I wouldn't have to take the bus. As a kid I always biked a lot with my neighbour.

Zero direct training was done for this trip. I think I might have done the stairs leading up the escarpment a few times just for the hell of it, in the couple months before I left. I rode my bike 365 days a year for the past 2 years. Rain, snow, whatever.

I am working in a kitchen for now. I wanted to get out of Hamilton, because I had never travelled. One of my good friends moved out to Vancouver, and I told him I would get there one day. A guy I worked with mentioned to me that he met some guys in Victoria, BC while he was staying with his mother, who had biked out there. I then realized that it was possible. This was around January. I bought my new bike April 1st and quit my job. I left May 5th.

I didn't time anything. Didn't have a watch. I would get up between 5-10am, ride for a few hours, have a snack for 15-30 minutes, ride for a few more hours, eat for another 30 mins, ride till the sun was setting.

I would adjust my position on the seat, and at one point I slid it forward on the x-axis, which allowed me to sit more comfortably on the larger part of the seat, which helped a ton. I had a sore ass, no two ways about it. It was a minor annoyance compared to by aching knees, and toward the end, thighs.

>>8052237

Thanks. The woman I loved and thought I would always be with left me two years ago. I was fucked for a while, but got over it and just ignored bitches from that point. Glad I did, too, because otherwise I never would have made my journey. Now I am in Van, and there are so many sexy hippy chicks everywhere.

I am posting most of the good pics. I took less and less as I went further. I found it difficult to capture the experience in pictures.

>>8052246

I have rain covers for my panniers, and for my pants and shoes. All of them failed with sustained rain. I had to put everything in double garbage bags, then in my panniers. I had to tie walmart bags around my shoes before putting on my covers. I would have to change into my other pair of jeans at night, and dry my wet ones on my panniers the next day while riding. My jacket would soak through, so I would only wear a microfibre shirt underneath, that would dry quickly when the rained stopped. I only had around 10 or less rainy days.

Anywhere from 30km with a brutal wind in my face, to 250km with it at my back. Average was about 100-150km.

>>8052299

Thanks. I grew my beard out since I quit my job. I was so haggard when I got to Vancouver. My moustache was way over my lips, making eating absurd. My hair was unruly. I went to a barber and got it all taken care of on my second day.

>>8052330

Almost all camping on the side of the Transcanada. Used camp sites a few times, but only if they would take the 5 bucks I was offering. If they did, I would shower there. I didn't really care about showers. Laundry was a bigger issue. My socks were rank. I had 4 pairs, and would wash them and then dry them on my panniers while I rode.

Stayed in a hostel in Sault Ste Marie, Thunder Bay, Winnipeg, and Calgary.

My bike is a Masi Speciale CX Uno. It ran me around 825 CAD. I also got front and back racks, so another 60, and the front and rear panniers, another 250. I only had the rear panniers, but right before I left I realized I needed to spread out the weight, and bought the front 2.

I went through 2 rear tires, and about 4 tubes. I busted a rear spoke right after Kamloops, BC, and luckily I was riding with another dude I caugh up with the day before who had started in Halifax, and he had spokes and a tool for fixing it. He needed to get to Van faster then my knees would allow me to go at this point, and he went ahead the next evening, while I rested. The next day I busted another rear spoke, and rode 30 km to Chilliwack, BC on a wobbly rim and no rear brake(had to disengage it so the wheel would clear the pads) and made it into a bike shop shortly before close. I bought a new rear wheel, which ran me 160 bucks which killed my overdraft. I din't care. I was 100km from my goal and I wasn't having another spoke break on me.
Anyway, I highly recommend the bike I used. Is a beautiful ride.

Not too sure where that one is, but it's most likely in southern Indonesia.

I've seen a very similar place in Bali last time I was there, which is an island in the Indonesia archipelago. It's terraced mainly for rice farming, if I remember correctly. Was an amazing sight.

I thought the weather would be nice, so I didn't bring a sleeping bag. It went down to 0°C at night more than half the time until late in the trip. I was cold. I got so desperate a few times, that I made a fire and placed large stones in it, heated them up for a long while, then wrapped them in my other pair of jeans and placed them under my feet under my blanket. I would lay on my towel. The rocks would stay hot all night and into the morning.

Everything I ate was bought at grocery stores. I had nothing to cook with. Next time I won'e be moving, so I will bring a way to boil water and cook my meals.

>>8052804

Hardest thing was my knees and thighs near the end. I pushed myself too hard the whole way. I would use my hardest gear all the time. I like to go fast. I would put all my power into climbing hills. I am paying for it still.

Next time I will bike for longer each day, and take it a little easier. I will also bring more money. I love to stop and get some baked goods while travelling. Having beer was nice, too.

I left with 650, and immediately spent 200+ on my tent. That left me with 10 dollars a day to spend. I was broke and almost every cent went to food and beer. I would say I lost 20 pounds on the trip.

>>8052936

Serious respect for fully loaded bikes. When I would see guys who only had 2 small bags, and no tent, I would think to myself 'they are doing it wrong'. It isn't touring if you don't camp out the majority of the time. If you stay in hotels/motels/inns every night, then don't even bother.

I passed 2 girls trying to hitch-hike with their bikes. I felt like telling them to just quit then. I guess it is difficult to push yourself to go everyday, but I never had a problem with it. I love riding and the trip was easier than I thought it would be. I was lucky and had bad wind only a few times. The hardest part was my failing knees and searing leg muscles.

I had no-where to send it. I left my 3 guitars with a friend in Toronto, and will get them mailed out later on. I didn't have money for a stove. Would have been another 200. Next time I will be more prepared.

It is actually difficult to try and prepare for something like this, so I didn't try to. I saved the things I wanted, and sold everything else.

Besides, now when I ride my bike around Vancouver without all the weight, I can just fly. Feels good man.

what gearing did you have and what did you use mostly?
I have 22-32-44 with 11-30 sprocket and I would like an 11-34 sprocket. Also, if you plan on doing more long tours you should try ortliebs. There are some e-shops that put their logo on them and you get them much cheaper. I got mine from globetrotter.de, 80euros the back large ones and 60 the front ones.
It is kinda difficult to arrange your things because they are just waterproof (and bulletproof) bags. But they are REALLY waterproof

I figured out what I want out of this life. If I had been killed on my way, I would have died happy. Being on the road, having nothing, made me appreciate everything. Every meal was amazing. Thinking about life while I rode. I read a few books on my way as well. I had them on my kobo ereader. Was a good way to pass the time from setting up camp until the sun set.

I learned I don't need much to be happy. I am volunteering at a church preparing meals and cleaning up after, even though I am an atheist and don't hide it in any way. I am doing it as payment for the free meals they offer.

All I want in life is to be happy, and I don't need much for that.

Bring lots of money. A tent, sleeping bag and small pillow. My fucking head was sore from sleeping on my sweater, shirts, etc. Toothbrush, sunscreen(very important), lotion for sunburns, bike tools to change tire, fix chain, replace spokes. Couple shirts, two pants(or shorts, whatever suits you) 4 underwear and socks. I also had my balaclava, simply because I had it form the winter when I rode. Same with my winter gloves. Both came in handy on the cold days and nights. I wore the gloves on my feet a few times. Batteries, charger, bike lights, mp3 player, smartphone with data plan.

Then add a little stove and some food to cook(oats are so good). Real touring requires a loaded bike. I would say 50 pounds minimum.

I went through 2 back tires. Flats I can deal with, as I have become quite good at patching. I got a flat my second day, patched it and rode for the next 200km without it failing. Then I got two more punctures that I patched, but hen I was losing air slowly and didn't want to bother with it all the time and changed the tube. The tires I just wore through because of the weight.

If you have lots of weight, and are going a great distance, you need more tools than that. You need to have spare spokes and be able to replace broken ones. Breaking spokes could leave you stranded. Sometimes I would have stretches of 170+km without a town, and even further between bike shops. Looking back, the whole thing is a little crazy, but you only live once.

Did it again in BC because I was having a beer in this nice secluded spot, and there was little path into some trees, and a tree knocked over that was a perfect seat. Both times were quick and easy. every other time was at either a walmart, mcdonalds, shopping centre, restaurant, coffee shop. I have always had good shit control. Same with pissing. I can ride all day without pissing. Only had to piss at the side of the road a few times. Pissed near my camp-site every morning.

It was a PSP, and I only had a USB charger so I charged it off my laptop. It would last for 20+ hours just for music. I have a cell phone, but no data plan, just calling. I let it die in Ontario and only started using it again here in Vancouver. Got my number switched over a couple days ago.

It is in an air-tight jar. I have had herb last for a year in it before. Every time I open it, it is as fresh as when I first got it. Only retards use zip-locks.

I had no home, so that wasn't an option. I had a great time. The day I did them in Ontario, I ended up climbing up a huge hill, and came flying down the other side. Was intense. At one point I had to pull over to urinate, and ended up pissing all over my front pannier because I was looking at the sky.

I lost weight because I could not afford food. I was always hungry. With more cash you could gain weight.

Tripping was good. I would make some zoom tea in the morning, then hit the road and only stop to vape a little. It is hard to explain what it was like to zoom across the landscape.

>>8054380

Some friends were supportive. Others haven't even commented on my journey photos. My sister said she didn't think I would make it at first. I only called my mother on mothers day because the lady I stayed with asked me to. We only talked for a few minutes, and I said what I am doing, and that was that. haven't talked to my father in years. Not really concerned with any of them. I can only rely on myself. I don't have to let anyone into my life if they bring me down. No more negativity for me.
