Well, I imagine they are retracted when he isn't sticking to anything, otherwise he wouldn't be able to pick anything up regularly and let it go.

So I suppose as long as the costume is extremely skintight, they'd just expand through it.

>> Anonymous 04/11/11(Mon)14:26 No.25037615
Somehow they are able to extend through his costume.

I have no idea how the fuck that works but it does.

He can choose whether to stick to things or let go, it's a mental thing in his head. It's very hard to get him off something if he doesn't choose to let go, and he's taken whole chunks of wall out instead of being knocked off.

That's all.

Has anyone brought up the fact that if he were to stick to a ceiling with his bare feet and hands would the er...."stick 'em hairs", be able to support his body weight? Or would his skin on his hands and feet rip off as the rest of his body falls down?

Sick, I know, but still, something that I think about from time to time.

That's not how friction works.
But then if he can extend them through his costume, I guess he could retract them in order to unstick.

Better question:
The surface area of thing like drywall, glass, and most other things he sticks to save for stone, could not in fact support his weight without breaking.
i.e. he would rip drywall out of the ceiling, and break glass easily.

> Wall-Crawling: Spider-Man's exposure to the mutated spider venom induced a mutagenic, cerebellum-wide alteration of his engrams resulting in the ability to mentally control the flux of inter-atomic attraction (electrostatic force) between molecular boundary layers. This overcomes the outer electron shell's normal behavior of mutual repulsion with other outer electron shells and permits the tremendous potential for electron attraction to prevail. The mentally controlled sub-atomic particle responsible for this has yet to be identified. This ability to affect the attraction between surfaces is so far limited to Spider-Man's body (especially concentrated in his hands and feet) and another object, with an upper limit of several tons per finger. Limits to this ability seem to be psychosomatic, and the full nature of this ability has yet to be established.

Glass for most skyscrapers would be strong enough to support his weight. If he uses his subatomic thingywhatever to increase the surface area he's attaching to outside of his hands and feet (and I don't see why not since the real effect seems to be magic, bitches), then drywall should be fine too.

Everybody move along.
Friction is due to Van de Waals forces acting between atoms. If he can control the strength of electron attraction, he can control Van de Waals. If he can stop electrons repulsing each other and make them attract to each other. Well. He's just gone and completely fucked with the biggest and more core belief we understand.
Fucking magnets.

Van der Wall forces. Van der Wall force is the physical force in weak atomic bonds. Geckos use these forces to cling to any surface that pretty much want to. Spider-Man probably does the same thing. He has tiny hairs on his hands like gecks have on their feet (I think)
>> Anonymous 04/11/11(Mon)15:02 No.25038194
>>25037884

Actually, the more I think on it, I don't even think he needs to extend his surface area past his fingertips and/or toes.

If he is attaching on the subatomic level to every atom connecting to his fingertips, then the force of 150lbs is being spread out to the billions-whatever atoms...each one of those is spreading the force out to the attraction they have to others in their molecules and compounds and so forth. So really, the molecular stability of the material he's attached to is really what determines it.

Wow, by this definition, Spider-man could walk on water simply by adhering to the surface molecules. The force would be completely spread out over such a huge surface area of connections. Only his own lack of belief means he can't.

Guys...is Spider-man Jesus?
