Greetings, /co/, /a/ here.

Quickly, what are the five most visually impressive comics/artists your board can offer?

Pic related, it's Hideout, one of the most most visually impressive manga we can suggest.
>> Anonymous 03/03/12(Sat)06:56 No.34755490
That's impressive to you? Seriously?
It's about the same level of quality as the better stories in the Tales of the Crypt magazine, except instead of giving characters realistic faces to go with the realistic bodies, you have the weirdly angled faces and razor sharp noses.

Impressive? that? wtf OP dont pretend to be representing /a/ please. I´m ashamed

Go read Berseerk please, or try anything by masamune shirow, for body/scenario and detail respectively.

As for impressive from /co/ I recommend you get Superman: Peace on Earth and maybe Batman: War on Crime, just to begin.

Batman vs Predator (THE FIRST CROSSOVER) is also excellent

And the François Bourgeon, who worked extremely close to photorealism in the last two books of the Passengers. No idea if that still counts as visually impressive though.

I've read Berserk, you asshat. It's also one of the most impressive. Hideout's style just works for its story, and its attention to detail is wonderful. Personally, I think Vagabond is the pinnacle of manga art, and Inoue the finest mangaka.

Impressive how exactly?
If we're talking about gorgeous/detailed art then:
James Stokoe (Orc Stain)
Axel Ross (Kingdom Come)
Alessandro Barbucci (Sky Doll)
Juanjo Guarnido (Blacksad)
Duncan Fegredo (That last major Hellboy saga)

If instead we're talking about artists who create amazing pages through brilliant panel layout which would be impossible in any other medium:
Frank Quitely (We3; pic related)
J H Williams (Batwoman Elegy)
Will Eisner (The Spirit)
Jonathan Hickman (The Nightly News)
Dave Sim (Cerebus)

I read that manga OP, didn't find the story or visuals to be too impressive. Also, it should've been a short story, maybe then it would've been more effective.
Anyway, there's a lot of European comics I found very impressive. Moebius' work, Blacksad, and many many others. Comics artists in Europe take their time and it shows.
I wonder what counts as impressive though? For example, I wouldn't consider Mike Mignola's art impressive - his drawing skill is a bit limited (At least when you compare him to Duncan Fegredo, who's ability is truly impressive) but it's extremely effective, without the need for excess details to "wow" the reader.

Not to take away from Gibbon's contribution, but doesn't Moore often write how he envisions a scene in his scripts? I remember they posted a part of his script for Miracleman in one of the issues. It was an entire page dedicated to how a single bench should look.

That doesn't even take into account the world building that goes into it before the script stage which they have both talked about being a very collaborative effort.

Also it is no small feat to do 9 panel grid for that many pages and make it that engaging and engrossing that is ALL Gibbons.

Here I have a quote relating to this >>34756509

>You know what pisses me off? Every single time I see the phrase “Alan Moore’s Watchmen“. And now that the movie is a couple weeks away I see it constantly. Watchmen is the work of two people – Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. Anyone that’s ever read an interview with either man knows that it is clearly the work of two people bouncing ideas off each other. The clockwork symmetry of the page design? Gibbons. The Black Freighter? Gibbons. Electric hydrants brought on by Dr. Manhattan’s existence leading to technological advance? Dave Gibbons. The lack of thought balloons and expository captions? Dave Fucking Gibbons. In a book built on visual motifs and themes, and no matter how infinitely complex (and/or overwritten) Moore’s scripts are, there’s only one man who drew the fucking book. Dave Gibbons is one of the most profound storytellers in the art form, and the guy gets slanted more than most. The language of mainstream comics of the past 20 years is all down to a few people and Dave Gibbons is one of the most important. Every time you mention Watchmen without Dave Gibbons, you’re showing how little you understand comics.

He does go into a lot of detail how he wants things to look but I remember that in V for Vendetta he wrote some "making of" stuff in the end of it, and he really stressed how much of a collaboration it was between him and the artist.

I love Mike's adherence to old school grit pulp comics, and I love the basics of his own style on it, but I have to say Duncan managed to take Mike's own take on pulp and really make it fantastic. I'm going to miss him doing the main arcs when Hellboy In Hell finally drops. Though with as surreal as I'm hoping the upcoming arcs are, it might be a chance for Mike to breathe a bit. Though Duncan and others will still be doing short pieces from before the Cavendish Hall incident, so it's all good. Still curious to see if Mike ever finishes his rumored short bit about Hellboy's first communion; all he said of it was it was essentially a short talky piece mostly about Bruttenholm and Hellboy bonding, and those are some of my favorite bits.

WOLK: So, for these four-page stories, would he give you a phone-book-sized script?

O’NEILL: They were always very detailed! Pat Mills was notorious for that as well — some artists wouldn’t work with Pat because he gave them too much detail — but Alan was even more so. It’s always horribly fascinating to me to look at the people who ignore his descriptions, because they end up with this disconnected artwork, like that Woody Allen film where he did new subtitles for a Japanese film. It’s just odd. It very rarely happens with Alan’s stuff. Alan’s scripts are, I’ve said many times before, incredible blueprints, but there’s room to maneuver and design. Alan draws anyway, so he’s very pictorial in his descriptions.

Thomas Ott, best european Horror artist IMO.

Though that's really impressive about him isn't only the excelent art, nor the creepy atmosphere, nor the fact that all of his stories are mute, but rather how he does his drawing:

There's no ink in that page, all of his art is done by scraping black paper with a cutter of something

I tried to read BOTI but I couldn't shake the Lone Wolf and Vagabond that I had already read and both are just on another level

Speaking of Samurai suprised this hasn't come up.

the first 3 or so volumes of BOTI are pretty so-so, which prevents a lot of people from really getting into it.

If you stick with it though, it gets pretty amazing. Personally I think its better than Vagabond, but I know that's a minority opinion

Calling his work magnificent would be selling it short. He worked as an artist for National Geographic, painting lost cities that no longer existed. Every page of Dinotopia is a full sized amazingly detailed painting. Some of his work hangs in the Smithsonian.

Yeah, he's not the most prolific artist but almost everybody digs him, I think.

Only because it is using art methods used by Western Artists for decades that haven't been used in much manga

Well he's said a couple times in the podcast he knows he's definitely not the best and the only reason he gets work as a artist is when his friend is doing a comic.

I would say so. Mike Allred discussions are usually about Madman, which most people like primarily for the writing.

OP here, don't be such a faggot. /a/ and /co/ are perfectly capable of mutual admiration and respect for each others mediums. This thread is about visually extraordinary comics, and artist. If you want great manga and mangaka, go make a thread on /a/. Although, somehow I doubt the thread will be this prolific.

Comics have a rich history boasting exceptional artists from every corner of the globe, and manga, albeit localized to Japan, Korea (manwa), and even China (manhua), still can offer rich illustrations to complement complex plots, and unique characters.

Thanks again, /co/, I have a shit ton of intriguing comics to wade through, filter, and then read. It's a very welcome distraction from the vacuousness of my daily life.

i think the thread reached its image limit, and i still wanted to post Arthur Ransen and Steve McNiven. Anyone want to make part 2 of this thread?

I know, I know. It's just that most of his recent stuff has been horrible poser shit and that's the problem. He USED to be a great artist, now he's just lazy. But that's beside the point, I know. His Deadpool being posted just pissed me off.

I think it's part of him wanting to get more stuff done. He had a divorce a couple years back (probably why you won't ever see The Bakers again) so I could see him trying to find ways to do a lot of jobs quicker.

Why would you downvote this thread? It was a great thread highlighting great art in comics. An example of good threads of /co/
