The planet watched in horror as the reports of the meteor that would destroy their little world grew more and more dire. Such a small, insignificant world in the deepness of space, when the inevitable crash takes them, it wont register on anywhere else in the galaxy.
No one was coming they knew, nothing to do but hope.
They watched the final day come and the crashing death of the planet was visible in the sky now, day and night. Still they cried out for someone to come, anyone.
Then as the meteor kissed the atmosphere, they saw the flash of blue surround the extinction event. Taking the shape of an odd looking feline form. We would know it as Daniel Striped Tiger, hugging the rock on another course.
The origin of their reprieve didn't stay for accolades. He just recalled the blue construct to a smaller form, petted his old friend for a job well done, and flew off to another place he was needed more.
It's such a good feeling to be needed.

I like how they were flippant and arrogant against him at first, but as he spoke, they could not stand against his truth and caring. They said he was the deciding factor that saved their cause.

I met Mr. Rogers shortly before he died. It was just a chance meeting on the street after I parked my car, but there he was, walking out of the Allegheny Athletic Club. (Even in his declining health, he kept up his swimming regimen.)

I was enrolling at the University of Pittsburgh (right down 5th Avenue from the WQED Studios where Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood was filmed.) at the time. Our meeting was brief, but I shook the man's hand and thanked him for everything he's done for children, television, and children's television.

As we parted, he turned to me again and said, "Welcome to the neighborhood."

Greatest memory ever. I fucking teared up just typing this.

Man, I don't know what kind of magic Jim Henson had harnessed and had at his disposal, but he did some things that you could in no wise get away with these days.

I watched the first episode of Fraggle Rock recently. This is a show that was aimed at children the same age and younger as Sesame Street's audience. In it, the fraggles go on some kind of adventure, and learn a lesson at the end. Do you know what the very first episode's lesson was? "Sometimes, Slavery feels like freedom."
That man, Jim Henson, he had fucking BALLS, man.

Fred Rogers drove a plain old Impala for years. One day, however, the car was stolen from the street near the TV station. When Rogers filed a police report, the story was picked up by every newspaper, radio and media outlet around town.

Amazingly, within 48 hours the car was left in the exact spot where it was taken from, with an apology on the dashboard. It read, "If we'd known it was yours, we never would have taken it."

He watched his figure to the pound. In covering Rogers' daily routine (waking up at 5 a.m.; praying for a few hours for all of his friends and family; studying; writing, making calls and reaching out to every fan who took the time to write him; going for a morning swim; getting on a scale; then really starting his day), writer Tom Junod explained that Mr. Rogers weighed in at exactly 143 pounds every day for the last 30 years of his life.

He didn't smoke, didn't drink, didn't eat the flesh of any animals, and was extremely disciplined in his daily routine. And while I'm not sure if any of that was because he'd mostly grown up a chubby, single child, Junod points out that Rogers found beauty in the number 143.

According to the piece, Rogers came "to see that number as a gift... because, as he says, "the number 143 means 'I love you.' It takes one letter to say 'I' and four letters to say 'love' and three letters to say 'you.' One hundred and forty-three."

Jim Henson, Fred Rodgers...these are the saints of our childhoods. They taught us lessons on friendship, on being ourselves, on how to never let life get us down even when things seem bleak. And they made us feel like we mattered.

Kids...they don't get that these days, do they? Who will be the Mister Rodgers to the children of this day and age? Who will sing to the youth that it's not easy being green? Is there hope?

I REMEMBER
>> Anonymous 07/08/11(Fri)00:27 No.27499620
He was genuinely curious about others. Mister Rogers was known as one of the toughest interviews because he'd often befriend reporters, asking them tons of questions, taking pictures of them, compiling an album for them at the end of their time together, and calling them after to check in on them and hear about their families. He wasn't concerned with himself, and genuinely loved hearing the life stories of others.

And it wasn't just with reporters. Once, on a fancy trip up to a PBS exec's house, he heard the limo driver was going to wait outside for 2 hours, so he insisted the driver come in and join them (which flustered the host).

On the way back, Rogers sat up front, and when he learned that they were passing the driver's home on the way, he asked if they could stop in to meet his family. According to the driver, it was one of the best nights of his life the house supposedly lit up when Rogers arrived, and he played jazz piano and bantered with them late into the night. Further, like with the reporters, Rogers sent him notes and kept in touch with the driver for the rest of his life.

There's always hope.

But I agree that the lack of such figures for this generation may be a truly negative thing.

Sesame Street is still going. It's made by different people, but what Henson set in motion persists after he's left us. Is it enough?

I heard about that. He never let any fan go unanswered, and he never gave them a static, fill-in-the-blank letter. They were all personalized to the child who wrote in.

Yeah, it's kind of amazing, what Jim Henson was capable of.
It's strange and almost contradictory, but he could talk at and make a specific audience understand some very deep concepts without having to talk down to that audience. That's really what made Jim, Jim. He does it in Fraggle Rock to deal with some serious sociological issues, he does it in Sesame Street for basic social skills, he does it in The Dinosaurs for some rather delicate topics having to do with puberty and becoming an adult, and he does it in The Muppet Show, and a couple of his movies to straight up poke fun and mine comedy from the entertainment industry as a whole.
It's really quite remarkable what he was capable of.

Ask a child on the street what shows they watch, what characters they love. Chances are, they're going to say something like Dora the Explorer or something.

And Dora the Explorer may be okay at entertaining the small minds of kids, but it doesn't truly make a child feel like they matter, doesn't make them think they're worth more than the world has to offer.

>On Tuesday, July 28, 1998, more than 300 PBS stations aired an episode of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood featuring Koko, the sign-language using gorilla. This week-long series addressed the confusion and fear young children often experience when confronted with new situations or people who look different from themselves. The week long theme of "inclusion" featured Koko and helpful talks about feeling included, no matter what a child can or can't do. Dispelling the age-old myth of gorillas as frightening monsters, Koko's affinity for Mister Rogers was immediately apparent. His quiet manner soon had Koko so relaxed that she had her arm around him and was intent on removing his sweater and shoes.

A small boy, brandishing a toy laser gun was blasting people he saw left and right, even Mr. Rogers, whom he shied away from when he recognized his target.
Mr. Rogers and the interviewer met the mother of the boy and he still hid behind the legs clutching his weapon at the gently smiling adult.
The mother was mortified at her sons behavior around Mr. Rogers, but he still smiled and calmly leaned down to the child, whispering into his ear.
The child was still shy, but seemed to reflect in his own way on the words and as they went on, the child waved a small goodbye to the writer and Mr. Rogers.

The interviewer asked, "What did you say to him?"
And Mr. Rogers said, "I just said I think he's strong. So very strong, even without that weapon."

Another thing that amazes me about Mister Rogers (they just don't stop) is that he was a devout Christian, but he never once brought up God or Jesus or anything like that on his show. Never trying to tie his niceness and sincerity to his religion. He...he respected boundaries, something that I find can be rather rare in this day and age.

In this day's cynical age, someone who is willing to show their love for the world and not be afraid is hard if not impossible. And that truly, truly saddens me.

He wasn't a character. Fred Mcfeely Rogers was a real man who genuinly cared for every living thing on this earth, weather they were deserving of such care or not. Well, to be fair, Dora the Explorer is doing wonders for children by teaching them English as well as Spanish. Many psychologists believe that there is a certain age (I've heard that it's around seven or eight) where children stop developing their grasp of language at the incredible speeds they had been before. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Critical_period_hypothesis#Second_language_acquisition

A child who watches Dora the Explorer (or Go Diego Go) growing up is very likely to continue to learn Spanish throughout their life, and become fluent. The widespread popularity of these shows will surely have a beneficial effect on the US's relationship with Mexico. Growing up in California, I definitely felt that there was a division between white students and Latino students, or at the very least I felt divided from Latino students, because I did not speak Spanish. The division was, of course, cultural as well, but diminishing the language barrier can only help connecting the cultures.

Dora the Explorer may not have taught the same values that we learned during our childhoods with Mr. Rogers and Sesame Street, but it deserves merit for what it does.

People always give me a strange look when they ask me who my hero is and I say "Mr. Rogers". Probably on the account of my long hair and beard, and that I have a bit of a foul mouth. But it's true. In the spirit of Mr. Rogers, I'm am who I am. I'm crass sometimes, but I'm caring. I'll probably be the guy who tells you some of the dirtiest jokes you'll ever hear, while helping you roof your house and asking nothing in return. I'm the friend who comes over to cook you a meal, just because I like your company. I'll be your ear and shoulder to cry on when you're going through hell, because I know you'd do the same for me.

I'm young, barely older then 21, and I know so little still. But I've known for awhile now what my one true goal in life is: to leave this world a better place then I found it. If I can make one person smile during my day, that's all I ask for. I don't need tons of money, only enough to get by. I don't need fancy things, just practical stuff.

If there's one thing I would say to everyone on here right now it's this. Tomorrow, I'd like you to randomly ask someone how their day's going. Maybe it's just the cashier at the grocery store, maybe the lady who serves you your coffee, maybe a classmate, maybe a coworker. But just ask them, and listen, take in what they have to say. And accept them for who they are.

Man, I really need to stop smoking so much weed before posting on /co/...

But never forget guys, /co/ = love.

He would have laughed at it too. Fred Rogers wouldn't have taken it too seriously. In fact, he might have taken it as a compliment--really, it wasn't meant unkindly.

He would probably have recommended that small children not be allowed to see it though.

This thread has inspired me to be nicer to people. I was pretty pissed off before I started reminiscing about Mr. Rogers. I'm all happy and friendly inside now.

I need to find all of his episodes on DVD. Future kids need to grow up with him.

I was going to post that one Fox News thing about Mr. Rogers to rile everyone up, but I just can't bring myself to do it...

Somewhere, in a far better reality than this, Fred Rogers, Bob Homme and Jim Henson are wearing the blue rings of the Blue Lantern Corps and doing their level best to save all of creation.

I'm not requesting this--this isn't the place for it--but I wish some wonderful drawfriend could draw this. It needs to happen.

It's okay to feel mad.

What do you do with the mad that you feel
When you feel so mad you could bite?
When the whole wide world seems oh, so wrong...
And nothing you do seems very right?

What do you do? Do you punch a bag?
Do you pound some clay or some dough?
Do you round up friends for a game of tag?
Or see how fast you go?

It's great to be able to stop
When you've planned a thing that's wrong,
And be able to do something else instead
And think this song:

I can stop when I want to
Can stop when I wish.
I can stop, stop, stop any time.
And what a good feeling to feel like this
And know that the feeling is really mine.
Know that there's something deep inside
That helps us become what we can.
For a girl can be someday a woman
And a boy can be someday a man.

I heard that most of the conversation in this show was improvised. Even as an adult it's funny just to listen to them make small talk. Is there an archive or DVD collection somewhere?

Not on Mr. Rogers, he was not one for improv.
He wanted to make sure every line and action was just right for the kids to hear or would not upset them in any way with something random.

That's it, I'm blocking 4chan from my computer.
There's no reason to keep browsing this website.
Most of the time I get engaged in trolls and end up angrier even if I just see their posts.
I want to leave feeling happy.
This is the best thread I can imagine.
I don't know what happened to us as we got older but I want to keep this good feeling.
Goodbye, friends.

See, that's the thing. Mr. Rogers was an adult. He had a wife and an adult life, not a sugarcoated one. He did everything we did, but without the constant shadow of cynicism and sarcasm that drags everything into the gutter. He could swim with a boy and while we jump in our minds to pedo-jokes or darkness, he was just swimming with a boy, nothing more.
He was more of a man than I am. That scares me, and I hope I can let go of this need to be cynical at every turn, because it makes life horrid.
I will try because Fred would want that.

Or you can stay and use the tactics of passive friendliness that Mr. Rogers used and fight a fight for something good.
Welcome to the Fred Corps.

I grew up in the states but I never even heard of Mr. Rogers until he died. At first I didn't get what the big deal was, then I learned about him. To this day I still haven't seen a single episode of his show for a good reason. If I did I would just lament not growing up with it. Instead of focusing on what could have been, I should focus on the now, what may be, and how to make them both a better place. I'm sure that's what Mr. Rogers would want. Also about this who will kids look up to thing. Honestly I think it would be better if they had no one rather then someone just acting like they care. I wish I knew why I think that. Seriously, the world needs someone like Mr. Rogers, not just for kids but for everyone,

At the risk of sounding foolish, I don't think so--at least not yet. I think you could write the CBC or something and pester them. Maybe if enough of us did, they'd do it.

Fred Rogers uses his ring to carefully and gently probe the psyches of dangerous foes, whereupon he finds common ground to open up dialogue with them. His ring constructs allow him to immobilize enemies that cannot be reached by reason and calm compassion without harm and pacify them. Even a red lantern's rage can be calmed, at least temporarily.
